These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JANUARY 2018

There’s nothing like a new year (new me) and a fresh start. I wrote some goals for the year and published them online for the world to see (you can read them here).  This month has been hectic with moving, work and getting my shit together to smash out another year, I’m convinced I’ve blinked and January has disappeared. So let’s look back at the hectic month that was.

👪 Family Visits

I love when my family comes to visit me in the Gong. I love taking them out and about to my latest and greatest cafes, restaurants and discoveries. This was no exception. I took them rock climbing and tortured them with a climb of sublime point. We went to some lovely cafes and all round had a great time! Thanks fam.

🏠 Moving House!

It’s that time of year again! The time where I pack up my life, sign a new lease and get some brand spanking new keys and house mates. I’ve just moved into a beautiful apartment with two beautiful people and I am so so so excited to be living where I am! Close to the beach, town and the station… I feel like the world is at my fingertips! Unfortunately I haven’t taken a visually aesthetically pleasing photo of my room yet but I sure will soon and I sure will let you guys know!

☀️ Port Stephens Tour

I’m pretty lucky to have grown up in Port Stephens. And there’s nothing quite like taking someone I love there to show them around. So I took Mitch to see the sights. Of course including Tomaree mountain, Murray’s Brewery, a romantic dinner at The Deck, and a cheeky dip at the nudist beach.

🎶 Tunes

Cloud Control – Rainbow City.  Wow have I had this on repeat! It’s grungy, funky and I’m in love! They’ve had a few really great singles out lately that I’ve been loving, so make sure to add this to your Summer hit list asap.

Winston Surfshirt – Be About You. It’s sexy, smooth and funky… what more could you ask for in a song. It’s the ultimate Sunday sesh tune to kick back, bob your head and sip your beer to.

Ocean Alley – Holiday. I don’t know what took me so long but damn am I in love with these guys! Their whole album is on point! They played recently at the uni bar and I’m devo I missed them. I get some serious Sticky Fingers vibes from them which is always fantastic. Their song Comedown is another banger I’ve had on repeat!! 10/10

Oh my god I have literally watched them for hours and thought they are the funniest, brightest and more awesome people alive! I’ve only just come across their channel and I am honestly in awe. They speak something crazy like 6 languages and produce videos in French, Portuguese and English (WHAT!!!) It’s so contagious watching their fun friendly chemistry and really puts you in a positive mood! For anyone that loves travel and language… these guys are for you!

Woman of the Hour – Lena Dunham podcast

So I’m a huge fan of Lena Dunham and am slowly getting more and more intrigued into this mysterious world of podcasts. I found Woman of the Hour on the music streaming app ‘Deezer’ that I use (it’s like Spotify but better). I’ve laughed, cried and been incredibly inspired by these podcasts and is an absolute must for all!

This speaks to me. Happiness is something that I value SO MUCH! It is core to who I am as a person and my values. One of the hardest things is acknowledging and accepting those moments when you’re actually not happy. It’s not a bad thing and it’s nothing to feel guilty about, but instead, should act as a reminder to check in with yourself, look after yourself and ultimately make changes that will lead to your happiness. And there’s only one person in the entire world that can ensure that happens… YOU.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: NOVEMBER 2017

Oh damn time is flying by too quickly! The other day I found a white hair on my head (red heads go white not grey just FYI), and I’m sure before I know it, it’ll be 2018. It’s already a week into December and I haven’t even published this post! Many apologies, life has been pretty hectic as you’re about to see. So without further ado, my fave things from November!

✈️ 🇹🇭 Travelling around Thailand with my sister

How else do you celebrate finishing your undergrad than by galavanting off to Thailand with your best friend? That’s exactly what my sister and I did. We did a 9 day G Adventures tour (which you can check out here), which took us around stunning Southern Thailand. We ate, drank, swam and ate some more. It’s the first time I’ve properly explored an Asian country and I was definitely impressed. Bangkok was insane and the countryside was beautiful! It’s definitely somewhere I’d love to go back and it really was the perfect way to celebrate finishing my degree.

🎉 One Day Sundays

For those of you who don’t know, One Day Sunday’s is originally a Sydney mini festival with rnb/dance music. This weekend they brought it to Wollongong so naturally, my friends and I got down and funky.

Louane. Louane is a French artist and regardless of whether you speak the language or not, everyone can appreciate her soul, energy and talent. This song particularly is super sweet and lovely and I’ve had it on repeat lately. For those of you who do speak French, I find that listening to music is a fantastic way to practice your vocab and embrace everything French!

Tiny Little Houses. If you’re after some grunge garage rock, these guys are for you. Really loving their stuff at the moment and I can’t wait to hear more.

I think that possibly the best thing about finishing uni is all the spare time I have to read! And this month I’ve read some fantastic books that have really made me fall back in love with reading!

Adventures of a Young Naturalist – David Attenborough

Um hello it’s David Attenborough?! But seriously this book is amazing and suitable for anyone who finds him an absolute legend. It’s about his expeditions during the 50’s to Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay. It’s absolutely fascinating and when you imagine him reading the words to you, it’s even better.

Trafficked – Sophie Hayes

I literally read this book in 1 day. It is such a page turner for all of the wrong reasons as the story is absolutely horrific. It’s about a British girl who is trafficked into sex work in Italy. For anyone remotely interested in the topic it is a must. For everyone else, it is incredibly eye opening to this huge hidden problem that affects millions across the globe in modern slavery.

The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood

WHY HAVEN’T I BEEN TOLD TO READ THIS BEFORE?! This book is absolutely incredible! It’s almost like the female equivalent to 1984. Again, I really couldn’t put this book down. It’s intelligent and incredibly relevant. Now I have to binge watch the TV show!

For One More Day – Mitch Albom

Mitch Albom is one of my favourite authors (my fave book every is Tuesday’s With Morrie). I read this in 2 days so it’s an easy read, but a really enjoyable one. It’s focused around family and relationships and I feel I really got something out of this book. Extremely lovely!

Ali’s Wedding

A 2017 Australian film about love, friendship, faith and family, this film really does have it all. It offers a unique and much needed voice from Muslim Australian’s living in a tense yet multicultural Australia. It’s really enjoyable and I absolutely loved it.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: FEBRUARY 17

Ok, so I get that February’s a weird little month. 28 days, 4 weeks, 672 hours, and damn have they disappeared. My first full month back in Australia and in Wollongong. And it’s been a freakin amazing. Let’s get to it!

Discovery Days

Let’s be honest, I have one of the best jobs on earth! And the best time to work as a student ambassador is definitely the annual Discovery Days. Not only is it a heaps of fun for the kids, but it’s fun overload for us as well. And this year was no exception, pouring rain and sweltering heat… nothing could stop us from having an incredible time. I’m so lucky to work with such an awesome team of inspiring people.

So I FINALLY put together my Montreal video. It took hours of gathering footage, editing and then re editing (because my original upload got muted due to copyright – oops) but it’s finally alive and chillin out there on the internet! I’m so proud of this video. It makes me so freaking happy to watch!

Finding a new HOUSE

If anyone knew me during the beginning of the month, they would’ve known how freakin stressed I was looking for a place to live. Khal, Rhys (my two amazing friends) and I were searching for a house to rent in Wollongong and damn is that market competitive. However, this goes to show how far positive thinking can go. I told the universe that I would have a house by Sunday the 5th Feb, and on Friday the 3rd Feb we got a very exciting phone call confirming this!

80s Prom Party

It was one of my beautiful friend’s 21st Birthday party and she decided to have it as an 80’s Prom Theme. OMG. First of all – why can’t I wear puffy pastel dresses around all day every day?! Secondly, damn it was so much fun! It’s always so nice going to a good house party, catching up with people you haven’t seen in forever and meeting new people. The night ended with a swim in the pool, me ripping the petticoat out from under my dress because I could barely breathe, and then crashing in an awesome van for the night. Top night!

Speaking at Orientation Week 

I know I’ve included a few little speech related moments through these posts, but every now and then, you gotta show yourself some love and be proud of what you’ve achieved. I was asked last minute to give a 10 minute presentation of a ‘Uni Survival Guide.’ I had prepared my slides but hadn’t really prepared much else. Yet I was able to get up there, smash out a great speech and speak confidently and calmly. I’m super proud of yet another speech I’ve made at UOW. It was even better when a student approached me afterwards asking me about my degree and uni experience, saying that I inspired her to look into doing exchange. (Awww).

Maître Gims. Yep, this whole French major thing has really got my head because now suddenly everything is in French. Regardless of whether you’re into French music, this song is actually freakin awesome!

Benjamin Clementine. I’ve only just discovered this guy and I’ve been listening on repeat. His music is so unique, the piano is enchanting and his vocal range is huge! Plus this video clip is just so stunning, I had to include it in my faves for this month.

Childish Gambino. So somehow last year I lived under a freakin rock and missed his amazing album that came out! Urgh it’s soooooooo good I’ve had this on repeat all month!

Flicks

Call My Agent. Netflix, you’ve done it again. This is a brilliantly dramatic yet light hearted TV show about agents and their crazy actors that they manage. It’s in French and I’ve been opting to have the French subtitles on to work on my French. It’s soooo worth the subtitles though! C’etait magnifique.

La La Land. Ooooh la la I’m in love. Emma Stone has been my ultimate girl crush since Easy A when I could finally relate to an awesome red head on screen being awkward and somewhat cool (at least, that’s what I thought I was). The soundtrack is amazing, it’s simple, beautiful and just so damn lovely to watch. Though I would recommend letting your friends know that it’s a musical before going. I somehow failed to mention that and they weren’t too happy! haha

RayaWasHere. I’ve been following Raya as long as I’ve been following Louis, but it’s not until recently that she’s really won me over. I think it was the video below, that really pulled me in. I feel that she has a very genuine and beautiful way of capturing her friendships and connections with people and I’d love to see more content like the one below! You go girl!

A Worldly Addiction.

I’m going to give myself a little plug here but I feel like this month I’ve really produced some great content. One of my favourite videos I’ve ever made is absolutely killing it and it’s received over 1300 views so far! WHAT?! I’ve been feeling super proud of myself and my drive to put myself out there, live life to the fullest and create beautiful moments, so why not do yourself a favour and chuck us a subscribe. Books

I haven’t technically finished it (I kinda got caught up in Season 3 of How To Get Away With Murder ((OMG))! But it’s so so good! ‘I wouldn’t start from here’ by Andrew Mueller is a reflection on his career and experiences as a war and conflict correspondent. I love in each chapter you’re taken somewhere completely different and never quite sure where he’s going with it. From Kosovo, to  Palestine, London to Lichtenstein, it’s a fascinating take on ‘the 21st Century and where it all went wrong.’

I’m organising another overseas trip (can you guess where?!), uni will hit with it’s full blow, my little sister is turning 21 (HOW?!) and the adventures will continue as always! These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: NOVEMBER 16

Oh damn it’s all becoming a bit too real. November is over which means only a few more weeks until Christmas, then after that I’ll be packing up my life here in Montreal and travelling around the West coast of America, before heading back home in January. I’m not sure I’m ready for it yet! But before I get ahead of myself…. let’s recap on the amazing month that was November!

Montreal Adventures

This month was the month to really embrace the beauty of Montreal. And with my dear friends, I think I’ve accomplished that. I was lucky enough to have one of my best friends to come and visit for a few nights. You can check out what we got up to below!

A Night Out At Reggies

OK so this isn’t exactly something new (I kinda go to Reggies every week). But this time I happened to bring my camera. Despite the fact that we’re missing my girl EVA (next time) – these photos are of beautiful people that I’m lucky enough to call my friends here in Montreal.

BOSTON

I was lucky enough to go the the States again this month, and this time it was Boston! What an awesome city! I honestly had such an amazing time with amazing people – check out the video to see Boston in it’s full glory.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of a good documentary. And Netflix has been DELIVERING! The Hunting Ground is a must watch for everyone, particularly university students. It sadly reflects deep seeded issues with the university as an institution and the unequal treatment of men and women.

13th absolutely blew my mind! I think this is compulsory viewing for every single human being. It shines a very ugly light on the American ‘justice’ system whilst highlighting the huge issues of racism, inequality and corrupt institutions that plague America. I was in tears by the end of the film, and after the election of Donald Trump, who’s racist words echo throughout a very powerful section of the film, I’m scared and fearful for those who are already subject to such inequality. #blacklivesmatter

Lovesick

Yep – I’ve done another binge watch of a Netflix series but this one has left me feeling love, loved and…. lovesick. It’s light hearted, classic British romantic humour and it just made me so happy to watch. 10/10 would recommend.

This song! I don’t know how I missed this when it was released but damn this song get’s me so pumped and makes me so happy! It makes me incredibly excited to be back in the sunshine, at the beach with some great friends!

Tom Odell, I will forever love you. I’ve been listening to all of his music lately, but this is just a great cover that I’ve had on repeat for the past few weeks. As someone in the comments described, Matt Healy (the lead singer of the 1975) is like a cigarette and Tom Odell, he’s like a smooth whisky with a vintage cigar.

This girl is ridiculously talented! I was lucky enough to see her premiere her short film called ‘Smoke That Travels’ and is one of the most incredible films I’ve ever seen. She write and producers her own music, she’s an incredible story teller and again, creates extremely meaningful and important content. I’m incredibly inspired by her and she’s definitely someone the YouTube community should embrace and support.

After being lucky enough to see Chris Hadfield speak at Buffer Fest (you can see the video here), I was inspired to read his book. And it’s just as amazing as him! It’s interesting, light hearted, but filled with some very important life lessons that anyone can relate to and learn from. I can’t wait to give it to my brother, who’s fascinated with science and space!

Dedicating quality time, going out and doing something fun and different, and just appreciating every opportunity I have to spend time with them. The Future Of Vlogging: NEISTAT QUITS THE VLOG

On November 19, iconic daily vlogger Casey Neistat announced the retirement of his vlog. At first I was in disbelief. I thought it was just another clickbait video, and after 2 minutes in, I’d realise he was joking and we’d all go back to our lives knowing that Casey was out there on his boosted board capturing his day for us to see. What is the future of Daily Vlogging?

After attending Buffer Festival, I was inspired by vloggers and YouTubers that I’d seen on my screen most mornings of this year. ‘Inspired, motivated, living life to the fullest, experience, risk and dedication’ were all words you could associate with that weekend. And nothing will ever take away from how amazing that experience was.

But I couldn’t help but wonder… how sustainable is vlogging, in particular, daily vlogging? When do they get to put their cameras down? How do they relax? What’s unique? Has this story been told before? What’s the point? What’s the goal? What if everyone starts daily vlogging, will it ever be interesting?

All of these thoughts had been circulating through my mind for a few weeks. I’ve had lengthy discussions with a lot of my friends about vlogging and where the line is between the fragile relationship of work/life, public/private, content/creativity. And then Casey made his announcement… So this post is about my thoughts of the future of daily vlogging. These are some of my questions and concerns for the people , the vloggers, out idols, who capture their daily lives, edit and post it online for the world to see.

Sustainability

As Casey states, ‘are you really going to be vlogging your life into your 40’s?’ He responds with a definite no. Not discrediting middle-aged vloggers, I think their voices are incredibly value. But how long are people going to keep it up? 5 years? 10 years? 30 years? As we’ve already seen from numerous vloggers, life changes and not always for the best. Relationships end and when you’ve got the entirety of that relationship documented, will they be able to deal with their life changes and be able to move on?

Daily vlogging is a full-time job, so when do they get a holiday? I know it’s a bit of a ridiculous question given that many travel vloggers are ALWAYS on holidays. But a holiday to me is disconnecting with your work life and responsibilities and enjoying time to yourself and with your friends or family.

Privacy

I know that if you willingly put your life online, then a lot of people might think you’re not entitled to privacy. But let’s be honest, whether you live your life through a camera and on social media or not, everyone values, loves and desires privacy. Those little intimate moments you share with someone you love, do they just need to accept that those intimate moments also include millions of subscribers?

Creativity

The more vloggers I seem to watch, who are a part of the ‘vlogger elite,‘ the more I come to realise how similar they are. Many of them travel together, shoot with similar cameras, travel to similar places, use similar shots, music and edits… more or less, many vlogs are exactly the same! Just replace the person holding the camera with your favourite personality and you’ve got a new vlog.

The video below is a recent favourite of mine. He touches on how vlogging, particularly Casey, has inspired people to be creating, but not necessarily creative.

Solutions

So I don’t believe vlogging is dead. AT ALL. Vlogging is an extremely revolutionary medium and YouTube is a powerful platform, that should be respected and understood. YouTubers are influential and can encourage, inspire, educate, motivate and connect with people all across the globe. And I particularly think that travel vloggers have a very important responsibility of educating people of other cultures, countries and ways of life. So here are some possible outcomes and solutions for the future of daily vlogging.

Move from daily to weekly

I think that by moving from daily vlogging to weekly or at least every other day would improve the quality of the content, and the quality of the vloggers life. No more late nights up editing and filming every single day.

Diversifying voices

I know that YouTube is a platform that gives everyone a voice and that it’s definitely partially my fault for not looking hard enough… but I seem to be seeing the same type of personality daily vlogging. White, males from America, the UK or Australia. And whilst they create amazing content, I haven’t yet stumbled across daily vloggers from other parts of the world with a diversity. Women, people of colour, disabilities… I think I would be ten times more engaged if I was seeing the same type of content (travel) produced by these voices. On that note, if you have any recommendations for YouTubers with a unique and diverse voice – let me know!

Meaningful Content

I recently stumbled across JacksGap channel and I’m in absolute awe. They’re using their creative talent to produce quality content, with an important message (you can see the video below). I think this is where the future of vlogging and YouTube is going (well, at least the next phase). Short, quality videos that entwine a ‘vlogging’ style with traditional ‘documentary’ style. Just check out Ben Brown and Steve Booker’s collaboration with the BBC for their mini-series ‘Mission Selfie.’ 

Vlogging is not dead. Casey is going to go on to do bigger and better things. And I think eventually, other YouTubers will come to the same realisation and conclusion.

An Open Letter To My First Crush: Johnny Depp

Dear Johnny Depp,

 Mrs. Depp. That’s what I used to write on my school books. Ever since I saw the first Pirates of the Caribbean film I became completely and dramatically obsessed with my very first crush, you, Johnny Depp.

Your performance in that movie motivated me to learn more about the man behind the dreadlocks and eyeliner (which I thought was the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen). This interest (obsession) lead me to purchasing two biographies and a lot of god damn movies, with Edward Scissorhands, The Corpse Bride and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape being some of my favourites (hello young Leonardo DiCaprio as well).

Johnny, you made me believe that no matter what life throws at us, we can get through it. That we must embrace our flaws, our quirkiness, and our uniqueness. You made me feel like it was OK to be different. That is was good to be different. You helped me through those high school nightmares of worry, comparison and self doubt.

You ignited the rebel within me. Whenever I’d talk about getting a tattoo, or listen to heavy rock music, I’d think about the opening chapters in your biographies and your early career in music. You’ve inspired me to pursue my passions, to be daring and to embrace my inner artist.

But lately, something’s been eating me Johnny. Not all flaws can be forgiven despite how quirky or sexy you may have once been to me. Domestic violence is not something that one of your quirky characters can distract me from, yet you’ve done a pretty good job of deflecting it in the media. Somehow you’ve become the victim and walked away stronger than ever.

At first I found myself defending you – ME! An avid feminist and activist against domestic violence. That’s what you made me do. You – your fame, your characters, your artistic flair made me think for one second that, “no that can’t be true.” and maybe that’s why this entire conversation has disappeared from media discussions. Because you’re Johnny Depp, you’re untouchable.

The media reported Amber Heard’s statements as ‘allegations’ and that her reports weren’t ‘verified.’ However, like the majority of sexual assault and domestic abuse, there’s little to no evidence of these violations. This doesn’t mean that we disregard them and attack the character of the woman whilst the male character is able to walk away unharmed. These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: SEPTEMBER 2016

OMG It’s been nearly a month since I’ve blogged! What have I been doing?! Well I’m about to tell you exactly what I’ve been doing but damn I’ve been busy. September really was an interesting month. Starting my classes at university, feeling like I actually belong in Montréal, meeting some really awesome people, having friends coming to visit and just being busy not being busy. It’s always difficult when you’re trying to figure out a new city and way of life. But I feel like I’ve reached a point where I’m not so lost, and that’s a pretty big achievement in my books. OK, let’s throwback to September 1 and see what’s been going on.

FROSH

For everyone outside of Canada, Frosh = Freshman + Orientation, which therefore equals a week of being ridiculously drunk. Usually, Frosh is reserved for first years however when you’re an exchange student, you can kind of do whatever you want. Whilst it was pretty much just a week of going out and drinking copious amounts of beer, I made some really great friends that have helped me settle into life here in Montréal.

Working on my video taking and making

I really wanted to improve and explore my video editing whilst here in Montréal. So I’ve been busy making some videos. I’ve been trying to go out and do some interesting things with some interesting people. You can check out my channel here.

Adventures

This month saw me adventuring mostly around Montreal. I had two friends, Abdul and Chloe come and visit (they’re my friends from back in Australia), I went hiking with the Geography association at Concordia, went out numerous times with friends, and I even went to a cat cafe!

Tunes

So my boys are back with another AMAZING ALBUM! This is probably one of my favourite songs on there, it’s filled with bangers! Whilst nothing will ever compare to their first album (hello perfection), this one is still good enough to leave me swooning over Dan Smith and hoping that one day we’ll (not so secretly get married).

Another album I’ve been listening to on repeat is Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s After the Rain. It’s become my new ‘I’m having trouble sleeping because I just saw a mouse run across my floor I need to listen to something soothing and peaceful to help me drift off’ album.

Movies

Like usual, I haven’t had a chance to watch many movies, but one that really captured my heart, Amy.  I absolutely love her music and found it incredibly sad when she died. I think it was the first time I’d seen someone die from drugs in the most tragic way, publicly. Seeing this movie showed me such a beautiful insight to her life before drugs and the sad decline of her career and personal life.

Noam Chomsky’s Who Rules the World?’ is a must for someone wanting a fresh perspective of historical and current issues regarding the power of the United States in other countries, particularly in the Middle East.

Quotes

This month I bring to you two quotes/little mantras/things I’ve been telling myself that have been pushing me onward and forward.

The first is the following. I guess that when you’re trying to sort your life out, it’s hard to get a little bit lost along the way. I think it’s always nice to remind yourself that you are one of a kind and that you shouldn’t feel pressured to change who you are in order to fit in. So I’ve really been trying to embrace who I am and be my own biggest fan.

The following one here is just a bit of fun but damn is it accurate. It’s easy (well at least for me) to get caught up in the never ending story of looking for a soul mate, partner, friend, who even knows. Another thing that I need to keep reminding myself is that I’ve got plenty of other shit to do before I need to stress myself out about boys.

Things I Want To Improve On

This month, my laziness level has risen to an all time high and my sleep pattern is officially wack. Whilst I have been able to be somewhat productive, I know that I’ve wasted a lot of valuable time that I could’ve been doing something meaningful and creative. So next month, I’m really trying to be more self aware and try to get up early, stop lying around in bed for hours, stop binge watching netflix and get out and do something!

OK October, you’ve been warned. Adelaide is going to be productive, adventurous and creative af.
