These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MAY 2018

Um excuse me, where did May go? I think I blinked a few times and suddenly we’re smacked with Winter and it’s end of semester! How flippin crazy?! This month I’ve been consumed with work and study, and as always had a little boogie here and there. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved this month. I’ve learnt that playing hard, means you gotta work hard, and working hard means you gotta throw yourself into your work. I feel that I’ve really reignited a love of research, learning and inquisitiveness, that is inspiring me to keep it up. With that said, I’m really looking forward to June where I can have a little bit of a break, and come back refreshed and ready for that grind!

👣Sublime

For those of you local to the Gong, you know about the painful hike that is sublime point. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s not just your casual stroll! With approximately 1000 steps at the VERY steep 1km incline, this one’s sure to get your blood pumping. It’s hard, you will get sweaty, but the view is absolutely worth it!

☀️ Those nature vibes

Carrying on from Sublime, there’s nothing quite like getting in touch with a little bit of nature to reset the stress of life. Luckily there’s been some stunning sunrises that have made me feel incredibly connected with the earth, sun, moon and ocean, and honestly, there’s no better feeling.

💋 Friend love

I know I keep coming back to this but maybe it’s because I have the best freakin friends on earth! I’m sooooo grateful for all of the lovely humans that surround me. Whether it’s to study, party, coffee, adventure, sweat, cry or watch Masterchef with, your love means the absolute world to me!

🎶Tunes

This Is America – Childish Gambino. Yep he’s a genius. It’s not just the incredibly intelligent video clip, but the song itself is incredibly impassioning. People in colour have long suffered in America’s ‘land of the free.’ Artists like Donald Glover have been using music and art to stand up and fight against oppression. Sadly, police brutality and violence against people of colour continue to die at the hands of hatred and guns. This is song is an incredible piece of social commentary. The question remains, how many more hits must come before change is implemented.

I Want A Girl (Carrie) – Moaning Lisa. Woo heeeeelllloooooooo there! After seeing these guys at Groovin the Moo I fell in LOVE! They’re absolutely rad and I can’t get enough! There’s nothing I love more than a kick ass girl band who is all about promoting love and support between and for women.

DMA’s. Do I really have to say more? I’ve been listening to their new album on REPEAT and I’m in love!

🎥 Flicks

Red Sparrow. This isn’t for the faint hearted. It’s a Russian spy thriller that’s pretty graphic, pretty hectic and pretty full on! Not exactly the ‘girls night in’ kinda movie Chloe and I had in mind, but nonetheless, DAMN it’s good! Plus I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence and she’s a total bad ass in this flick!

Angela Davis: An Autobiography

If you’ve seen me at all this month, then I’ve most likely told you all about Angela Davis. GIRL CRUSH ALERT! I came across Davis during an assignment I had to do on critical theory. Not wanting to write about old white men again, stumbling across Davis, lesbian, ex-Black Panther, communist, did not disappoint. In fact, I was so inspired by her ideas and contribution to academic research and activism, I went to the library and borrowed her autobiography. Yep, I absolutely love and admire her, and I would absolutely recommend this book and familiarising yourself with her work. She wrote it when she was 28 years old and had been imprisoned on false allegations. Her story is one that deserves to be heard by all people, especially students, wanting to make a change in the world.

Sorelle Amore. Wow this woman is incredible. Her smile is drop dead gorgeous and her personality literally shines so bright it jumps out and through your screen. She’s incredibly artistic, fit, healthy, happy and has a very genuine connection with her audience. I love watching her YouTube videos and following her on Instagram really inspires me to lift my game. This is one travel vlogger I would ABSOLUTELY recommend checking out.

📝 Quote

I think it’s time for a Dead Poets Society movie night soon! This quote fills me with motivation and reminds me why I got my tattoo ‘Carpe Diem.’ Make your lives extraordinary! What a powerful statement and what a life I will live if I make the most of every opportunity and Carpe fucking diem!

Well May you have been delightful! As we brace ourselves for a chilly winter, work and uni commitments are becoming more demanding and intense. So if I seem a bit stressed or distant, I’m sorry. I know that this is my time to grind, work hard and really throw myself into everything. I’ll be FREE in October and damn will the satisfaction taste sweet!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JANUARY 2018

There’s nothing like a new year (new me) and a fresh start. I wrote some goals for the year and published them online for the world to see (you can read them here).  This month has been hectic with moving, work and getting my shit together to smash out another year, I’m convinced I’ve blinked and January has disappeared. So let’s look back at the hectic month that was.

👪 Family Visits

I love when my family comes to visit me in the Gong. I love taking them out and about to my latest and greatest cafes, restaurants and discoveries. This was no exception. I took them rock climbing and tortured them with a climb of sublime point. We went to some lovely cafes and all round had a great time! Thanks fam.

🏠 Moving House!

It’s that time of year again! The time where I pack up my life, sign a new lease and get some brand spanking new keys and house mates. I’ve just moved into a beautiful apartment with two beautiful people and I am so so so excited to be living where I am! Close to the beach, town and the station… I feel like the world is at my fingertips! Unfortunately I haven’t taken a visually aesthetically pleasing photo of my room yet but I sure will soon and I sure will let you guys know!

☀️ Port Stephens Tour

I’m pretty lucky to have grown up in Port Stephens. And there’s nothing quite like taking someone I love there to show them around. So I took Mitch to see the sights. Of course including Tomaree mountain, Murray’s Brewery, a romantic dinner at The Deck, and a cheeky dip at the nudist beach.

Cloud Control – Rainbow City.  Wow have I had this on repeat! It’s grungy, funky and I’m in love! They’ve had a few really great singles out lately that I’ve been loving, so make sure to add this to your Summer hit list asap.

Winston Surfshirt – Be About You. It’s sexy, smooth and funky… what more could you ask for in a song. It’s the ultimate Sunday sesh tune to kick back, bob your head and sip your beer to.

Ocean Alley – Holiday. I don’t know what took me so long but damn am I in love with these guys! Their whole album is on point! They played recently at the uni bar and I’m devo I missed them. I get some serious Sticky Fingers vibes from them which is always fantastic. Their song Comedown is another banger I’ve had on repeat!! 10/10

Oh my god I have literally watched them for hours and thought they are the funniest, brightest and more awesome people alive! I’ve only just come across their channel and I am honestly in awe. They speak something crazy like 6 languages and produce videos in French, Portuguese and English (WHAT!!!) It’s so contagious watching their fun friendly chemistry and really puts you in a positive mood! For anyone that loves travel and language… these guys are for you!

Woman of the Hour – Lena Dunham podcast

So I’m a huge fan of Lena Dunham and am slowly getting more and more intrigued into this mysterious world of podcasts. I found Woman of the Hour on the music streaming app ‘Deezer’ that I use (it’s like Spotify but better). I’ve laughed, cried and been incredibly inspired by these podcasts and is an absolute must for all!

This speaks to me. Happiness is something that I value SO MUCH! It is core to who I am as a person and my values. One of the hardest things is acknowledging and accepting those moments when you’re actually not happy. It’s not a bad thing and it’s nothing to feel guilty about, but instead, should act as a reminder to check in with yourself, look after yourself and ultimately make changes that will lead to your happiness. And there’s only one person in the entire world that can ensure that happens… YOU.

February, please be kind. I’m not sure I can handle another crazy whirlwind month. The grind is real and the work is hard, I just need to remember to love myself along the way.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: AUGUST 2017

August, damn girl you hit me full speed! Where did you come and go? This month has been absolutely hectic. Uni has well and truly kicked in, I’ve been working like crazy, and had my weekends booked out all month! It’s kinda terrifying as we head into September… before we know it I’ll be graduating! WTF?! But for the time being, let’s have a look at what August has delivered.

🇧🇷 Andre!

My amazing Brazilian friend Andre came to visit for a few days. I met Andre 6 years ago, way back when we were in year 11 Earth and Environmental Science class! I remember being completed amazed that he was from Brazil… the other side of the world! As good friends do, we kept in touch, skyped from time to time, and when it came to him planning his trip back to Australia, of course he had to come and visit the beautiful gong! Next time I see you Andre, it’ll be in Brazil I promise!

🎤 The Last Frost

Wollongong has been delivering the goods lately when it comes to gigs. And this month it held an awesome little festival featuring Violent Soho! So for those of you who know me, they’re one of my fave bands ever and this was the 4th time I’ve seen them. It was so so so much fun! That was until my boyfriend Mitch got whacked across the head with a flying chair (yep – there’s flying chairs in a Violent Soho mosh pit) (and yep, I have a bf, that’s a new thing. But more on that later). Regardless of the blood, sweat and tears (literally), it was an awesome night!

🏆 Fitness

I’ve been trying to keep up with my friend Dylan, and have been rock climbing from time to time. As you can clearly see, I’ve got huge guns and am therefore an expert rock climber (hahahaha nervous laugh….).

IMG_7902

This month I also survived the CITY 2 SURF! Considering I did absolutely zero training, I’m pretty proud of my efforts. I ran with my friend Chloe (though she sped ahead Lightning McQueen style) and with my dad and sister. It was such a fun day! This is the second one I’ve done and can honestly say (hopefully) that next year I’ll actually train for it! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in fitness/wants to enjoy a nice day out in Sydney!

🌸 Grounds of Alexandria

Really? Need I say more….

🌅 Watching the sun rise

One of the perks of having your boyfriend wake up at 5am everyday (yep, this boyfriend thing is pretty great), is that you’re up and starting your day before the sun has even had a chance to rise. Which means over the past month I’ve seen some pretty beautiful sunrises. I’ve always wanted to be a morning person… much to the disbelief of my Mum… but I think I may be getting there. Just check out these 3 beautiful sunrises I saw this month! Watch this space for more!

🎶 Tunes

Tired Lion – Fresh. I first heard this song on Triple J and I desperately tried to Shazam it. Luckily for me, this song is such a great one, that it’s been played multiple times as of late and I’m absolutely in love! They’re kick ass and I have had this song on repeat!

Meg Mac – Low Blows. With the release of her new album and an upcoming Australian tour (which I have tickets for – eep!!!), I’ve been freakin loving Meg Mac! She’s got such an amazing voice and her sound is so unique and fabulous.

Nicky Jam – Hasta el amancer. Because it’s winter and I’m soooo over this cold weather, I’ve been reliving my Central American vibes by listening to Nicky Jam. What tunes he has! Honestly if you want a pick me up and

So I just got Stan (an Australian version of Netflix) and ooh la la there’s some pretty great shows! And one of them is Younger. Um hello Hilary Duff is in this show!! But it’s actually a super cute and funky show that is perfect watching for those of you who have been looking for the modern version of Sex and the City.

The Other Guy is another show on Stan and it’s some of the best TV I’ve EVER SEEN! If you’re a young Australian, this show will actually make you laugh out loud it’s tragically hilarious.

Bad News – Anjan Sundaram

I borrowed this book from my friend that studies Journalism and damn this book in incredible. It’s about dying journalism in Rwanda, a country that to the Western World, is seen as progressive country. This month I’ve really been trying to focus on the positive in life. It’s so easy to get caught up in drama, in negativity and in stuff that just adds pressure, stress and shit to your life. Of course life sometimes gives you a shit hand, but your attitude is a powerful thing you can control. Once you decide to be happy, you will notice that other negative parts of your life tend to slip away and you’ll feel more free and fabulous enough you’ll wanna shake yo booty everywhere.

Well I have absolutely zero idea where this month disappeared to, and before you know it, I’ll be recapping on the entire year! It’s been a whirlwind and looking at my diary, September won’t be any different! Peace and love.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MARCH

March Madness. March really was a bit of a mixed bag. Ups and downs, exciting nights out and boring essays to write. I guess that’s to be expected with uni kicking off, working 30hours a week and trying to maintain some sort of ‘normal’ social life. Overall, it was pretty damn good. However I have to admit, I had a week or two where I was completely flat. It was a good reminder that I need to be taking more time to myself and allowing myself some time off every now and again. (you can read about how to overcome a bad week here). But, over to some good news… this post celebrates 1 year of ‘These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things.’ How exciting! If you’ve missed my previous few, you can read them here. Et voila! Here are my highlights from March!

Mardi Gras

Ah Mardi Gras – the happiest day of the year. I wasn’t sure I could top the excitement of Mardi Gras 2015, but I have to admit, I had a pretty damn awesome time! You can read all about my experience here!

Garden Party

So by now, most of you would probably know how much I love my music. So when I saw the tickets to Garden Party at UOW Unibar were only $30, I bought one straight away. It was such a good night with such a good crowd. Dune Rats were amazing, but I must admit that Mansionair stole the show!!!

Home for the long weekend

Because uni’s kicked off again and I’m working ever spare hour I’m not at uni, I usually can’t justify making the 6hour journey home just for a weekend. And then God gave us long weekends (or should I say Jesus?). I had such a lovely weekend at home. Sunrise walks, swimming at the beach, spending time with my friends, playing with my dogs and chilling out watching nature documentaries. It was so good to just switch off for a day or two and relax. Something I’ve really been needing to do for a long time.

Let Them Stay Rally

A few weeks ago I attended the Let Them Stay Rally. Not only is it about the refugees currently hospitalised on mainland Australia from Nauru, but about all refugees. Letting them know that they’re welcome. That we’re all the same, and we all have the right to live without fear of prosecution or abuse. I’m so glad that I went to the event because I felt apart of a wider community who genuinely cared so much about this massive issue. And then we held the Let The Stay Banner on the beach and there I am holding the banner above the L.

Netball

This session, we’ve started up our awesome KB Banditos team again. We’re only in week 3 and we’ve already won a game! (I’m not the best netball player out there and we’re in it for the fun, so for us to win… that’s a big deal!)

Tunes

I’ve been playing this song on repeat!!! My housemate introduced me to Urthboy’s music and for that, I will always be grateful!

Plus… Violent Soho’s new album came out this month WACO, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat! I’ve been waiting for them to release this album for a long time coming!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: FEBRUARY

February. You graced us with an extra day this month, and it still wasn’t long enough. This month was full on! With work being absolutely crazy and uni starting back, February was pretty damn intense! However I learnt a pretty valuable lesson this month. Because life was so damn hectic, I ran myself down to the ground! For the first time in years I got a cold sore. What the heck?! And not only that, but it stayed for three whole weeks! Three weeks! I took so many vitamins, used lots of different creams and tried my hardest not to touch it, but it just wouldn’t leave. And along with having a cold sore, I constantly felt fatigued and found it difficult to concentrate when at work. My body was screaming at me to just calm down and take a breather for a day. It felt horrible and it’s not something I want to go through again. This just made me realise how we need to look after our bodies, and when we need time out, we need to be strong enough to say so. Alright, enough about that. Here’s some of the things that got me through the craziest and shortest month of the year.

My Diary

So I finally got around to buying myself a diary. I used to always write in a diary, however for some reason I just stopped writing. It’s something that I’ve always loved doing. So with February being a pretty stressful month, I thought I would suck it up and finally just buy a diary and get writing. The best thing is that the diary I bought doesn’t have lines. So I’ve experimented with some little drawings here and there too. Watch this space for more reasons why I absolutely love keeping a diary. I honestly can’t explain how beneficial and amazing keeping a diary is, so I’ll fill it in later.

I wrote about my experience and what I learnt here. Quick run down – I spoke to over 6000 students over 5 days spreading my word and trying to spread some happiness and inspiration to some truly incredible kids. It was one of the scariest, exciting yet nerve racking experiences of my life.

Moving into a new apartment with new and awesome people.

This session, I’m living at the same residence but in a different section (a much nicer and cleaner section). I was so excited to move into a new place, but slightly nervous about who I would be living with. And as soon as they moved in, it was love at first sight! I’m living in a four share apartment with Nicola (Graphic Design student), Tiger (Engineering student – and yes… his name is really Tiger), and Sam (Medical Health Science Student). Plus we’ve adopted a few more housemates who practically live with us too! And I’m so happy that my old housemate Chantelle is one of them. Overall, I’m living with some pretty awesome people! #imagine #thedream

Sunrises and Waterfalls

So you probably already know I’m not the best morning person around, however I’m trying to change that. And after moving in with my new housemates, I’m not really getting much of an option. I’ve spent two mornings up at 5:30am to watch the sunrise and go for an early morning swim.  We also spent a day a day at Macquarie Pass (just half an hour from Wollongong) and it was such a beautiful way to spend a day off!

More 21st’s

Again, 2016 is the year of 21st birthday parties! I went to my friend of 10 years 21st in Newcastle! It was so good to see her and everyone from back home! I also went to my other friends 21st who had a decked out bar tab in Wollongong. It was great to spend time with people I only see occasionally and have a free flow of beer! Thanks heaps to Mollie and Audi for the amazing parties and even better memories! Keep up the parties guys!

Blogs and Vlogs

I’ve really been digging Hey Nadine. I’ve been wanting to watch a few more female vloggers and eventually want to move beyond watching just travel vloggers and watching people who vlog about important social issues. But I particularly like this video because there’s a few different travel vloggers talking about the pros and cons of female solo travel.

Quote

“Seek respect, not attention. It lasts longer.”

This past month I saw some pretty horrible acts of attention seeking. It’s fake and everyone can see right through it. People are attracted to other people who are confident and true to themselves. Not people who act how they think they should. This quote has showed me the importance of self respect and respect for others, and to always be conscious of the long term effects of decisions you make now.

*

And so concludes the month that was February. Uni has started and of course I’ve got plenty of things to keep me busy so I’m really looking forward to what march has to offer!
