These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MAY 2018

Um excuse me, where did May go? I think I blinked a few times and suddenly we’re smacked with Winter and it’s end of semester! How flippin crazy?! This month I’ve been consumed with work and study, and as always had a little boogie here and there. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved this month. I’ve learnt that playing hard, means you gotta work hard, and working hard means you gotta throw yourself into your work. I feel that I’ve really reignited a love of research, learning and inquisitiveness, that is inspiring me to keep it up. With that said, I’m really looking forward to June where I can have a little bit of a break, and come back refreshed and ready for that grind!

👣Sublime

For those of you local to the Gong, you know about the painful hike that is sublime point. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s not just your casual stroll! With approximately 1000 steps at the VERY steep 1km incline, this one’s sure to get your blood pumping. It’s hard, you will get sweaty, but the view is absolutely worth it!

☀️ Those nature vibes

Carrying on from Sublime, there’s nothing quite like getting in touch with a little bit of nature to reset the stress of life. Luckily there’s been some stunning sunrises that have made me feel incredibly connected with the earth, sun, moon and ocean, and honestly, there’s no better feeling.

💋 Friend love

I know I keep coming back to this but maybe it’s because I have the best freakin friends on earth! I’m sooooo grateful for all of the lovely humans that surround me. Whether it’s to study, party, coffee, adventure, sweat, cry or watch Masterchef with, your love means the absolute world to me!

🎶Tunes

This Is America – Childish Gambino. Yep he’s a genius. It’s not just the incredibly intelligent video clip, but the song itself is incredibly impassioning. People in colour have long suffered in America’s ‘land of the free.’ Artists like Donald Glover have been using music and art to stand up and fight against oppression. Sadly, police brutality and violence against people of colour continue to die at the hands of hatred and guns. This is song is an incredible piece of social commentary. The question remains, how many more hits must come before change is implemented.

I Want A Girl (Carrie) – Moaning Lisa. Woo heeeeelllloooooooo there! After seeing these guys at Groovin the Moo I fell in LOVE! They’re absolutely rad and I can’t get enough! There’s nothing I love more than a kick ass girl band who is all about promoting love and support between and for women.

DMA’s. Do I really have to say more? I’ve been listening to their new album on REPEAT and I’m in love!

🎥 Flicks

Red Sparrow. This isn’t for the faint hearted. It’s a Russian spy thriller that’s pretty graphic, pretty hectic and pretty full on! Not exactly the ‘girls night in’ kinda movie Chloe and I had in mind, but nonetheless, DAMN it’s good! Plus I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence and she’s a total bad ass in this flick!

📗Books

Angela Davis: An Autobiography

If you’ve seen me at all this month, then I’ve most likely told you all about Angela Davis. GIRL CRUSH ALERT! I came across Davis during an assignment I had to do on critical theory. Not wanting to write about old white men again, stumbling across Davis, lesbian, ex-Black Panther, communist, did not disappoint. In fact, I was so inspired by her ideas and contribution to academic research and activism, I went to the library and borrowed her autobiography. Yep, I absolutely love and admire her, and I would absolutely recommend this book and familiarising yourself with her work. She wrote it when she was 28 years old and had been imprisoned on false allegations. Her story is one that deserves to be heard by all people, especially students, wanting to make a change in the world.

📷 Bloggers and Vloggers

Sorelle Amore. Wow this woman is incredible. Her smile is drop dead gorgeous and her personality literally shines so bright it jumps out and through your screen. She’s incredibly artistic, fit, healthy, happy and has a very genuine connection with her audience. I love watching her YouTube videos and following her on Instagram really inspires me to lift my game. This is one travel vlogger I would ABSOLUTELY recommend checking out.

📝 Quote

I think it’s time for a Dead Poets Society movie night soon! This quote fills me with motivation and reminds me why I got my tattoo ‘Carpe Diem.’ Make your lives extraordinary! What a powerful statement and what a life I will live if I make the most of every opportunity and Carpe fucking diem!

Well May you have been delightful! As we brace ourselves for a chilly winter, work and uni commitments are becoming more demanding and intense. So if I seem a bit stressed or distant, I’m sorry. I know that this is my time to grind, work hard and really throw myself into everything. I’ll be FREE in October and damn will the satisfaction taste sweet!

Sculptures by the Sea

You know when you have those weekends when you know you just need a change of scenery? Well what better scenery to immerse yourself in, than Bondi Beach’s Sculptures by the Sea. This is a beautifully unique ‘art gallery’ which has gorgeous sculptures dotted along the coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama. Even without the gorgeous sculptures, the coastal walk is stunning, but the way of incorporating art into this magnificent landscape is purely stunning.

I already CANNOT wait until it’s back in 2016!

Have you been to Sculptures by the Sea? What was your favourite sculpture? Let me know in the comments below!

One day exploring the Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is one of those breathtaking journeys that you just have to experience in your lifetime. I was lucky enough to go with my family when I was a wee lass, however, being 4 years old, I didn’t exactly appreciate/remember the whole experience. So… on a girls long weekend away to Melbourne with one of my best friends (Tishia), we decided to relive this awesome journey together and it was one of the best day tours I’ve ever done.

The magnificent 12 Apostles
The magnificent 12 Apostles

We travelled with ExtraGreen Holidays located in Swanston Street. Our tour guides name was Frank, and frankly (haha get it?) he was awesome. For $45 we definitely got our value for money. From 7:30am-7:30pm, we were on and off the bus and absolutely breathtaken by the spectacular views of the unique coastline of the Great Ocean Road. We were considering hiring a car and doing it ourselves, however for that value for money, we not only got there and back, but were also taught some great history lessons along the way. So in our situation, it was totally worth our money. (NOTE: The weekend special is $45, any other day can cost you up to $100).

These windy roads are not for the faint hearted. If you're prone to car sickness, be prepared.

We stopped and had lunch at Appollo Bay for an amazing Fish and Chips feast (what else can you expect from a small coastal town?) and continued on down the windy roads with many photo stops along the way. The tour highlight include, the 12 Apostles (the most iconic part of the Great Ocean Road), Lord and George and London Bridge. Even though we willingly came to Victoria in the middle of winter, it was indeed pretty damn cold, so a good jacket and warm clothes are definitely recommended. And as Frank wisely advised us, on the Great Ocean Road, it can be sunny one minute and raining the next so always be prepared.

With so many photo stops, you'll have plenty of time to capture the perfect photo

Many of you may ask if it’s worth spending the full day on a bus to see some rocks and cliffs. If you’re spending several days in Melbourne (like we did) then yes, absolutely. It’s cost effective, exciting, adventurous, and you get to meet lots of great new people and learn about the history and making of the Great Ocean Road. However, if you’re intending on doing further travel throughout Australia and Victoria and already hire a car, it’s probably worth heading there yourself. Then you can do it at your own pace. Saying that, we were definitely given plenty of time at each spot to explore each area and take some pretty amazing photos.

The photos speak for themselves. The Great Ocean Road is definitely a must- regardless of if it’s Summer or Winter, raining or sunny, it’s going to take your breath away I can guarantee that!

These Are A Few of My Favourite Things: JUNE

June where did you go? Please come back because you were one amazing month. Despite the depression associated with exams and the end of session, there’s nothing quite like walking out of an exam hall hearing ‘Eye of the Tiger’ flood through your mind and you feel like an absolute champion (unless you did a linguistics exam like me). Either way, Autumn session is done and the holidays are here! June has quite frankly been fabulous and I’d like to share it with all of you.

Our end of session college formal. Open bar, DJ, dancefloor and 200 of your closest friends. You’re definitely in for a good night.

The Northern Beaches. If you’re looking for a nice little weekend away, then get on a bus from Sydney and head up towards the Northern Beaches. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was! We were treated to a gorgeous sunset and wandered the streets and beaches… it was absolutely spectacular!

And if you need some more inspiration… World of Wanderlust. I’m constantly inspired and motivated to make the most out of life and spend hours gazing at beautiful travel pictures on pinterest! WARNING: this particular video will challenge you to reconsider your life.

And on that note… The day I got to meet Brooke Saward and have morning tea wanderlusting about the world.

THIS SONG!

Going home for the weekend. I don’t get home much lately because of uni and work, but whenever I do go home it’s always lovely. I’m constantly in awe of how beautiful nature is and how much I love just taking some time to unwind and relax. Oh, and it’s always great to have a roast dinner with my family.

Beautiful Port Stephens

And just another because it's just THAT pretty
And just another because it’s just THAT pretty

And finally, I joined the gym! After recently re-reading my post about all the things I’ve been hoping to achieve this year, it’s about time I did something on it and re-joining the gym was the easiest (and at the same time hardest) thing to do. Watch out City2Surf.

I hope you’ve all had a lovley month and hope that July is equally as awesome.

Peace and love

A beautiful weekend in the Northern Beaches

This weekend, I was lucky enough to visit one of my friends houses on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Nature treated us to a stunning performance, as the sun dipped below the ocean, beautiful ombres of pinks, purples, golds and blues lit up the sky, I was reminded of the simple beauties of everyday life! So I thought I’d share some of these pictures with you, as a reminder that beauty is all around, and sometimes if you’ve got a friend to share the special moments with, that’s all you really need in life.

As the day ends to rest
The sunset does its best
Setting on fire the lively waves
Colouring orange the nature he saves
its pure ancient glorious perfection.

The great ocean will receive
The burning sun who’s going to leave.
Slowly comes the night
Devouring that magic light:
we are still suspended in a great delight.

When Will We Learn?

The recent violent storms which shook New South Wales, claimed lives, destroyed property, communications crashed and more or less shut down the state. While the state prepares to clean up and carry on, a bigger problem emerges. The C word. Climate Change.

Image from
Image from here

Climate Change is real. There’s no denying it and there’s definitely no avoiding it. It will affect each and every one of us. But the poor, helpless and the people who contribute least to to climate change will be affected first.

The Kiribiti Islands are being claimed by the sea, Australian rural areas are in serious drought, ice caps are melting, glaciers are retreating, we’re cutting down forests, causing extinctions, polluting our oceans and our air, sucking, drilling and digging out natural resources and it is believed that World War 3 will be over clean water and food…. and why? For money. But at what cost? We sacrifice our time, soul, patience, kindness, happiness, respect, excitement, passion and love… is it really worth it?

Don’t believe me? Don’t believe the science? Don’t believe reality? Then I have a challenge for you. Go to the sea. By yourself. And sit in the sand. Immerse yourself in the water and float. Water blocks your ears and you can heart your heart pumping blood through your chest. Your weightless as the ocean supports you, slowly moving up and down. Feel that? Freedom? That is the immense power, beauty and tranquility of nature. If you can’t believe in that, then I guess there’s no hope.

But what can I do? I’m just one person in this world of over 7billion people. One person may not be able to change the world, but one idea can. And the idea of healing the environment is one that we must believe in, in order to make the world a better place.

Getting My Fix

I find it ever so empowering to believe in the power, strength and never ending ocean.

Its chameleon colours stimulate our eyes.

The sweet smell of salt tickles our taste buds.

Its silky waters glide over our skin invigorating us with life and meaning.

It sings to us a symphony of sounds from the highest wave to the lowest crevasse.

You never fail to ignite a fire within me. As I submerge myself into your cool waters, my body becomes numb. Such an exhilarating feeling… not to feel. I am vulnerable and lost. I come to you with my questions, my worries, my dreams… hoping you can help me make sense of it all.  The world sometimes blurs past me. I may nod politely and listen intently, trying ever so hard to pay attention. But there’s something else that grasps my spirit. It may be the glorious warmth of the sun or the encouraging breezes of the wind… I hear waves crashing as a reminder than when I am lost, you will be there to guide my way. My lungs burn as sea water drips down my throat, your magic creating the sparks deep within my heart that sometimes dim in this dark world. I am weightless. In these moments, I am invincible. My mind is clear. I am free.

I emerge from your sanctuary and inhale your fresh salty air. I can’ t help but smile as you push me towards the shore.

The sunshine kisses my skin and my spirit. Your song twirls around in my mind as I trudge back to life. You energize me, your name tattooed across my heart reminding me that happiness is never too far away.

You Are Love

wave

You are like the strong, wise ocean.

You are the reason for my existence. You give me purpose to live and breathe. You push me onto that wave when I’m scared, lift me up when I am down and inspire and motivate me when I dive into the water.

You carry the wisdom of years in your mind and body, letting it ripple along the surface, guiding us when we’re heading into a storm. Even when we make mistakes, like the kind currents you nurture us, to help us grow and understand.

The times when the sunshine beams down and all is calm and quiet gives us time to relax, just to talk and enjoy each others company, floating carelessly across the smooth surface.

There are times when we may feel like we’re drowning, getting sucked deeper and deeper under water, the cold current gripping onto our souls. It’s not easy to swim through the struggle and pain, though you carry us over your shoulders and we breathe the fresh air together, addicted to that taste of being alive.

You are our savior, our life guard, our bubbles of air that push us forward. For now, I am just a little wave of water lost in the calm waters of the Caribbean. I watch your grace and strength as you battle the seas of the Pacific, hoping one day I can become like you.

You are my best friend and my muse.

You are my Mum.

Thank you.
