These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JANUARY 2018

There’s nothing like a new year (new me) and a fresh start. I wrote some goals for the year and published them online for the world to see (you can read them here).  This month has been hectic with moving, work and getting my shit together to smash out another year, I’m convinced I’ve blinked and January has disappeared. So let’s look back at the hectic month that was.

👪 Family Visits

I love when my family comes to visit me in the Gong. I love taking them out and about to my latest and greatest cafes, restaurants and discoveries. This was no exception. I took them rock climbing and tortured them with a climb of sublime point. We went to some lovely cafes and all round had a great time! Thanks fam.

🏠 Moving House!

It’s that time of year again! The time where I pack up my life, sign a new lease and get some brand spanking new keys and house mates. I’ve just moved into a beautiful apartment with two beautiful people and I am so so so excited to be living where I am! Close to the beach, town and the station… I feel like the world is at my fingertips! Unfortunately I haven’t taken a visually aesthetically pleasing photo of my room yet but I sure will soon and I sure will let you guys know!

☀️ Port Stephens Tour

I’m pretty lucky to have grown up in Port Stephens. And there’s nothing quite like taking someone I love there to show them around. So I took Mitch to see the sights. Of course including Tomaree mountain, Murray’s Brewery, a romantic dinner at The Deck, and a cheeky dip at the nudist beach.

🎶 Tunes

Cloud Control – Rainbow City.  Wow have I had this on repeat! It’s grungy, funky and I’m in love! They’ve had a few really great singles out lately that I’ve been loving, so make sure to add this to your Summer hit list asap.

Winston Surfshirt – Be About You. It’s sexy, smooth and funky… what more could you ask for in a song. It’s the ultimate Sunday sesh tune to kick back, bob your head and sip your beer to.

Ocean Alley – Holiday. I don’t know what took me so long but damn am I in love with these guys! Their whole album is on point! They played recently at the uni bar and I’m devo I missed them. I get some serious Sticky Fingers vibes from them which is always fantastic. Their song Comedown is another banger I’ve had on repeat!! 10/10

It’s so contagious watching their fun friendly chemistry and really puts you in a positive mood! For anyone that loves travel and language… these guys are for you!

Woman of the Hour – Lena Dunham podcast

So I’m a huge fan of Lena Dunham and am slowly getting more and more intrigued into this mysterious world of podcasts. I found Woman of the Hour on the music streaming app ‘Deezer’ that I use (it’s like Spotify but better). I’ve laughed, cried and been incredibly inspired by these podcasts and is an absolute must for all!

This speaks to me. Happiness is something that I value SO MUCH! It is core to who I am as a person and my values. One of the hardest things is acknowledging and accepting those moments when you’re actually not happy. It’s not a bad thing and it’s nothing to feel guilty about, but instead, should act as a reminder to check in with yourself, look after yourself and ultimately make changes that will lead to your happiness. And there’s only one person in the entire world that can ensure that happens… YOU.

February, please be kind. I’m not sure I can handle another crazy whirlwind month. The grind is real and the work is hard, I just need to remember to love myself along the way.

Parlez-vous français?

French. The language of love. Featuring in T.V shows like Madeline since we were little, kick starting my obsession with everything French. And I know what you’re thinking ‘oh you’re just like every other girl who loves the idea of France and Paris…’ well… I’m different (of course). After visiting Paris 3 times last year, it’s only enhanced my love affair with the City of Lights more. I’m currently studying French at university and one day, want to speak it fluently! So, this is a way for me to a. share with you some reasons that I love the French language and all things French, b. to write some more in my blog, and c. a major form of procrastination (my french exam is next week). So this is what I LOVE about the french language!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvyMG0z0FZY The Music – Carla Bruni is definitely my pick when it comes to French music. Sweet melodies and meaningful lyrics (once you decipher them), I always have her music playing in the background and find myself humming along! If your music style is a bit more upbeat… try Stromae (to party and dance to), or Yelle (the French equivalent to Katy Perry). Listening to French music helps familiarise yourself with certain vocabulary and you sound pretty cool if you can sing a song in another language!

A Jazz band I saw at a Brasserie. The guy playing the trumpet kept taking swigs of something from his flask. Very entertaining!

The Films – French films are renowned for their romance and quirkiness. Amelie is one of the most well known French films, highlighting the beauty of Paris and French cinema’s unique traits. Les Intouchables is a lovely feel good movie with drama and comedy, Un Secret is about the Nazi Occupation of France and Amour,  a beautiful love story where you’ll use a whole box of tissues.  These French films are some of my favourite and I’d highly recommend them. Watching French films helps you become familiar with the phrases, speed and intonations, all of which you can’t really learn in a classroom. The Drinks – Whilst one would assume that France (Paris) has good coffee, you are seriously mistaken! Instead, don’t miss out on happy hour cocktails! Usually 5 euros and they’re delicious! The more cocktails you drink, the more confident you get in your French speaking skills, an opportunity not to be missed!

The Food – If you order food/drinks in French, you’re waiter will be a million times nicer to you than someone who points at what they want. And if your waiter is nice to you, then the whole experience just becomes delightful! Also, don’t forget to tip! When You’re Lost – The amount of times a bit of basic French helped me get out of sticky situations, losing my way around Montmartre, can’t find the exit in the Metro, and asking how to get to x, has saved me a lot of confusing time! Make sure you scrub up on your directions before going! Les garçons! – And of course don’t forget about the most important reason why you’ll need your French skills up to scratch, the number of cute French guys you’ll see around.

Some Common Phrases You Might Need

Hello = Bonjour

Goodbye = Au Revoir

I would like = Je voudrais… (you can then point or pronounce what you’d like to order)

Please = S’il vous plaît

Thankyou (very much) = Merci (beaucoup)

The bill please = L’addition s’il vous plaît

I’m lost = Je suis perdu

You’re cute (for the french boys) = Tu es mignon!

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir? (just kidding)

So if those spectacular reasons don’t motivate you to start learning French I don’t know what will?!

Bisous x
