These Are A Few of My Favourite Things: FEBRUARY 2018

For the shortest month of the year, February sure did deliver a lot. I think I can positively say that this month has been the most tumultuous and testing month of my life. And it seems like it wasn’t just for me but a lot of people in my life. In the 4 weeks that were February I found myself single again, moved houses, have experienced incredible stress around our previous tenancy and landlord, found out more about myself than I ever thought and been offered a new job. Maybe chaos attracts chaos. But one thing I do know is that strength attracts strength and I sure have been inspired and motivated by all of the wonderful people around me. The people who have helped lift me up, push me out of my comfort zone and help me find strength in some pretty challenging times, and it is these people I am eternally grateful for. Alas, February is over and finally a much awaited March arrives.

💃🏿 Bangarra Dance Company

I guess you could call it Christmas in February, because for Christmas I bought Mum tickets to see Bangarra Dance Company’s show at the Newcastle Civic Theatre. It was such a gorgeous performance and I was absolutely in awe. Wow! I cannot recommend seeing them enough! Thanks Mum for being the ultimate date to the theatre!

🎨Museum of Contemporary Art

So I finally made it to the MCA’s incredible exhibition by Pipilotti Rist’s ‘Sip my Ocean.’ I had seen several Instagrammers check out this exhibition and damn their photos were incredible…. so I wanted to check it out for myself! Chloe and I headed to Sydney dressed to the 9’s and damn it did not disappoint! It was an incredible experience of light and sound! Plus we got several pretty awesome Instagrams so I’m pretty content.

🎹 RAD Bar

For those of you who don’t know… RAD is (as the name implies) a super rad bar in Wollongong that is home to some incredibly live music. Showcasing local and incredible acts, I constantly forget how awesome RAD is!

💕 Date Night

No matter how rough and tough, or exciting and wild life gets, it’s so important to take a breather and catch up with the people around you that you love. I had a little date night with Chantelle, and it felt so great to go out and just spend some quality time together. I also spent Valentines day with the one and only Miss Tishia! We ate way too much food together and hatched our plan to take over the world. Watch out friends, date night is coming to a night near you.

📷 Polaroid Camera

For Christmas I was spoilt and my sister bought me a polaroid camera. And I wasn’t sure how much I would use it, but surprise surprise, I love taking photos and this is no exception. These are just some of the pics that I’ve snapped and I absolutely love it! I think my favourite thing is my reaction when I photo turns out well!

🎶Tunes

Steele Syndicate. I was lucky enough to randomly catch these guys at RAD bar this month and DAMN I have not danced so much! Their vibe is so funky and uplifting! Add a few beers and you my friend, have a good night filled with dancing and good times ahead of you.

Odette. OMG this song! I’ve heard it so many times on Triple J but I never picked up on who the angel behind it was! Finally I’ve tracked her down and wow she’s amazing! Her other work is amazing and she is definitely one to keep on your radar!

Vallis Alps

These guys!!! Her vocals are so astounding and the beat has wicked good vibes! I’ve been listening to this EP on my way to work and I assure you I’ve been arriving in a great mood! Get around it!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Audrey Hepburn you mega babe! There’s nothing quite like re-watching an old classic with some amazing company. Whilst I must admit I get quite lost and caught up in the plot, it’s so joyful to be whisked away back in time to the golden ages. This movie is a constant reminder to keep it classy but just a little nasty.

📚 Books

Chapter One by Daniel Flynn. So there’s this company called Thankyou. I’m sure you may be familiar with it. They’re basically a social enterprise where money goes directly towards a project in another country. You may know Thankyou water. When you buy a bottle of water, proceeds go towards providing clean water to a community in Vientam for example. This book is the business behind it and I must admit is it very captivating, interesting and inspiring. Whilst I have some pretty big critiques of the company and the execution of their mission, the one thing that cannot be faulted is their determination to get in there, be taken seriously and make a difference. It’s an easy read and for anyone interested in start ups, business and development, then this one is for you!

The world doesn’t need another book, it needs an idea.

Bryce + Hailey

Uh what is it with cute couples and YouTube?! There’s something about these two that are so adorable that I can’t help but fall in love with their videos! Their style is funky as and they seem like the sweetest most genuine humans. I particularly loved their video from around Europe so make sure to give these guys some love.

📝 Quote

So as you can imagine, this month was a little rough. It’s OK, I’m OK and I know that everything is going to be OK. But it takes time to come to that realisation. Not even the realisation, but to truly feel and believe it. It’s too easy to convince yourself that you’re alright when you’re not, and (sadly) too easy to fake a smile. What is difficult is acknowledging you’re lost, confused, sad, lonely, optimistic, excited, relieved…. confronting those feelings is difficult. But once you do, and choose to surround yourself with people who are ‘loving, nourishing, kind and authentic,’ you’ll realise how amazing you are and how much you deserve!

I can honestly say that I feel like a stronger person now that the month from hell is over! With each ending comes new beginnings, some in the most unlikely of places. March, I am excited for everything to come, I’m committing to working hard and playing even harder… just please be kind. I’d really appreciate it.

An Open Letter To My First Crush: Johnny Depp

**Content Warning: This article discusses domestic violence.**

mary-ellen-mark-photo-session-february-johnny-depp-58552e30a290f336cb1279645dda2dd9-large-99285

Dear Johnny Depp,

Mrs. Depp. That’s what I used to write on my school books. Ever since I saw the first Pirates of the Caribbean film I became completely and dramatically obsessed with my very first crush, you, Johnny Depp.

Your performance in that movie motivated me to learn more about the man behind the dreadlocks and eyeliner (which I thought was the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen). This interest (obsession) lead me to purchasing two biographies and a lot of god damn movies, with Edward Scissorhands, The Corpse Bride and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape being some of my favourites (hello young Leonardo DiCaprio as well).

Johnny, you made me believe that no matter what life throws at us, we can get through it. That we must embrace our flaws, our quirkiness, and our uniqueness. You made me feel like it was OK to be different. That is was good to be different. You helped me through those high school nightmares of worry, comparison and self doubt.

You ignited the rebel within me. Whenever I’d talk about getting a tattoo, or listen to heavy rock music, I’d think about the opening chapters in your biographies and your early career in music. You’ve inspired me to pursue my passions, to be daring and to embrace my inner artist.

But lately, something’s been eating me Johnny. Not all flaws can be forgiven despite how quirky or sexy you may have once been to me. Domestic violence is not something that one of your quirky characters can distract me from, yet you’ve done a pretty good job of deflecting it in the media. Somehow you’ve become the victim and walked away stronger than ever.

At first I found myself defending you – ME! An avid feminist and activist against domestic violence. That’s what you made me do. You – your fame, your characters, your artistic flair made me think for one second that, “no that can’t be true.” and maybe that’s why this entire conversation has disappeared from media discussions. Because you’re Johnny Depp, you’re untouchable.

The media reported Amber Heard’s statements as ‘allegations’ and that her reports weren’t ‘verified.’ However, like the majority of sexual assault and domestic abuse, there’s little to no evidence of these violations. This doesn’t mean that we disregard them and attack the character of the woman whilst the male character is able to walk away unharmed. I thought we had finally moved on from victim blaming, however the response from the media would suggest not.

This reflects a very dark side of society. Like Edward Scissorhands, we try to speak up and someone gets cut. Well it’s not going to be me, your wife, or your children. It’s you. I’ve loved you since I was a teenager. A 10-year crush shattered to pieces. Well Johnny Depp, my first crush, I’m letting you go. Maybe you’ll embody your character like in ‘Lone Ranger.’ But sadly, for you, you no longer have our hearts.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JANUARY

A new year, a new adventure and a whole heap of new things that I’m absolutely in love with. So if you’ve been as busy as I have, then you’d agree that January has been an absolute blur! But it’s been pretty damn incredible! So here are a few of my favourite things for January!

Fun For Louis

I don’t know what rock I’ve been hiding under but O M G! This guy is awesome and absolutely living the dream! I’ve nearly made it my daily ritual of watching his videos every morning for inspiration. I can’t imagine the time and effort that goes into making a travel vlog each and every day and I have sooooo much respect for him! And I love watching his vlogs about Youtube and business. It’s so interesting to learn so much about someone living the ultimate adventure!

Home Sweet Home

It was so good to get home for a weekend! And even better to enjoy some sunshine with my family!

Australia Day Shenanigans

What more could you ask for? A pool, beers, friends and Triple J? I had such a fantastic day getting a bit too much sun, and drinking a bit too much beer. I must admit that this year, the awareness of what Australia Day means to our First Australian people has been incredibly disturbing. It’s something that I believe needs to be addressed seriously and not just a ‘trend’ on social media. We can do so much more as a nation to improve equality between people in our nation and it’s time that it happens.

Adventuring around the countryside

I did get a fair bit of road tripping done. I was lucky enough to borrow my family’s land cruiser for a month so I just had to take advantage of this! I made it down to Canberra, Broulee/Bateman’s Bay, out to Bowral and back up to Port Stephens.

21st Party

It seems to be the year for it all! And what a banger to start it all off with! One of my best friends 21st birthday parties. And with plenty more to come, the parties won’t stop there.

Tunes

I am absolutely obsessed with this song! I’ve been listening to it on repeat and this has definitely been the sound of my January.

Flicks

So over Summer I’ve actually been studying an Australian film class at uni. And what better excuse do you have than to watch films as study?! And I decided to watch as many Australian films as possible and I came across Tracks. It’s based on a real story and it’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. And if you’re interested in films about travel, adventure and self discovery – you will LOVE this film.

Blogs

Journal By Assia. A travel and lifestyle blog written by Assia. Her photos are absolutely beautiful and she frequently posts about her new favourite book or her latest weekend adventures, which makes her blog fresh and exciting. I love following her journey and always look forward to reading what she’s up to next. If you’re after some inspiration and motivation – then look no further!

Simplicity Relished.  I’ve only recently come across this blog and I’m absolutely in love. It’s all about living simply and minimalistic lifestyle. Her photos are gorgeous and with a touch of travel in there – it provides for hours of light reading.

Books

Escape From Camp 14. So I actually haven’t finished this book – I’m really close I promise! But it’s so dark, depressing and insightful that I find it difficult to pick up but impossible to put down. I don’t know much about North Korea and the camps there, so reading this personal book about what happens there is pretty confronting but extremely important to learn about.

Quote

“If you’re dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”

This quote has really pushed me this month. To think and act bigger, take a risk and be daring with the decisions I make and the dreams and goals that I set. I wouldn’t say I’m scared by them, but I’m definitely taking a deep breath before attempting to tackle them! Let’s do it!

Well that just about sums up my January. Sorry this post is late again. As you can see I’ve had a pretty crazy month! But I’m keen for even bigger and better adventures to come my way and share them with you guys much more frequently!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MUSIC

If anyone knows me in the slightest, they’ll be able to tell you that I love a good dance and sing along. I probably say ‘OMG I love this song,’ about 50 times a day, so when it comes to music… it’s kind of a big deal. Along with having just voted for Triple J Hottest 100, I thought now would be a good time to share some of my favourite tunes from 2015! (Note: They’re not all from this year, in fact I’m a bit of a sucker for being 2 years behind the times, but it doesn’t stop them from being AMAZING songs).

MUSIC FESTIVALS

Future Music Festival

You can read about my experience here. The absolute highlight for me was seeing Die Antwood and Nero. They absolutely KILLED it!

Ed Sheeran

The ginger man himself. I may or may not have cried when I went and saw him in April. He absolutely rocked it. There’s not many people that could perform just with an acoustic guitar in front of thousands of people!

Alt-J & Asgeir

What a combo! Seeing Asgeir had been a dream of mine since having to sell my tickets to see him last year. And when I found out he was supporting Alt J… I grabbed two friends and bought tickets ASAP!

SAFIA

The best $15 I’ve ever spent and the cheapest I’ll probably ever see them again. Held at our local uni bar, I was blown away by the quality and talent of the band. Definitely going places!

Fox and the Hound

The singer may only be a 7 but their music is an 11! I’ve probably listened to their EP waaaaaaay too many times. Please hurry up and release an album!

Mumford & Sons Festival

Such good value for money! A one day mini festival in the Domain. Featuring the beautiful Meg Mac, Jake Bugg and plenty of others we danced through the rain and had an absolute blast!

My Hottest 100 Vote for 2015

Aaaaaaaannnddd that’s a wrap!!! Can’t wait for some new releases from some of these artists and to discover some more! Who were your favourite artists from 2015? Let me know in the comments below!

The Ultimate Study Playlist

Let’s face it, studying is less than enjoyabe, slightly boring and a drag. Whilst its necessary to chain yourself to your desk to force yourself to do those readings you should’ve done in week 3 to pass your exams, as lame as it sounds, you want to try and make studying as much of an enjoyable experience as possible. And the most important thing for me is having good but appropriate MUSIC!

When I study, the type of music I listen to is very particular. I can’t have music which has too much beat because then I can’t stay still. I can’t have super catchy songs because then I want to sing along at the top of my lungs, and trust me, no one wants that. And I can’t have rnb playing because then I get stuck watching all the cool video clips. Instead, I opt for quite relaxing, etheral, chilled and inspiring music to keep me going through all of those study notes.

So here are some of the playlists I have on repeat when studying.

It would appear that Icelandic music is the key to successful study! What can I say, it’s a country that provides the goods!

Happy Studying!

Control-Alt-J

I love those epic nights out where you don’t really have any plans or expectations, and then the night just keeps on rising from one level of awesome to more awesome! And that’s exactly what last night was about. Having minimal plans, two great friends and an amazing city like Sydney to play with.

Me, Jonny and Zina
Me, Jonny and Zina

At around 5:30 we exited Town Hall and set ourselves upon Sydney. Our excitement for a good night led us to a cool little bar near the QVB building that had $8 cocktails. Hallelujah! After a sexy cosmopolitan and channeling our inner sex and the city selves we wandered around George Street in search of a good restaurant to eat at.

And then we found the restaurant. The most confusing, random, awesome and delicious restaurant I’ve ever been to. It’s called Mizuya Japanese Restaurant and Karaoke and it’s on George Street. We ordered wine, salmon sashimi, seared crispy salmon sushi and some amazing seafood noodles and kept ordering food on our little screen whenever we felt like more. I’d definitely recommend it, just don’t forget to bring some awesome friends to help you with the wine.

Afterwards, we went back to the $8 cocktail place… naturally, and embraced more of our Carrie Bradshaws. I think even Jonny was channeling some Aidan Shaw in there.

IMG_3183

And theeeeen… it was CONCERT TIME!!! We got a taxi to the Entertainment Centre (where we probably could’ve walked, but risked Zinas ankles in her killer heels). A few more beers later and we were seated with our ears and hearts being serenaded by ASGEIR! He was incredible! His voice was abolustely incredible and he sang one of my favourite songs ‘In Harmony,’ in Icelandic which was such a pleasant surprise! He definitely didn’t play for long enough but I look forward to the next time I see him play!

Another beer and then it was time. ALT-J! I still can’t even deal with how good they were! Any rumours you’ve heard about them not being that good live – I can tell you is absolute bullocks. They smashed it! Highlights for me included ‘Something Good,’ ‘Breezeblocks’ and my personal favourite ‘Taro.’ It was such an awesome atmosphere and their music was moving.IMG_3177

Once we’d come down off of our Asgeir/Alt J cloud, we made our way to Scubar, a backpackers bar near Central YHA. It seems that we stumbled across a glo party and I somehow ended up all over my coat. Nonetheless, we danced, drank and had a great time before getting a slice of pizza, jumping on the train and having a snooze.

And this is why I love spending my money on concert tickets. Because it’s always so much more than the concert. It’s the people you’re with, the places you go, the drinks you drink, the food you eat, what you wear and the memories you make. I’m so grateful for my awesome friends and I’m so glad I could share such awesome music with you.

Hugs Not Drugs @Future Music Festival

Future Music Festival… one of the few times of the year roided up guys and fake titted girls can show off what they’ve got to 30,000 other people, whilst gabba-ing, pinging and crowd surfing. Ok, so a little bit exaggerated, but none the less, there sure are a lot of drugs there. Pills, pingas, e, molly… whatever you want to call it, every second person seems to be on it. So here are my reasons being sober at a festival (minus a few vodka redbulls) is the best way to enjoy your day.

12-face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-winking-eye

To be honest, if you want to go ahead and do it, that’s fine by me, but the bottom line is that pills are illegal in Australia and can cause adverse effects. Security at festivals are usually really tight, with police and sniffer dogs everywhere. To be honest, I was quite surprised at the relative lack of security at Future this year however, is sneaking drugs in really worth a massive fine, or a criminal record? Hell no!

Then there’s the people that don’t know their limits and go too hard and crash hard. Whilst my friends are I were enjoying our lunch, a boy and a girl sat next to us. The girls eyes were rolling back in her head and she was struggling to keep her head up. Her friend just kept asking, ‘are you ok, are you ok?’ Obviously she’s not OK mate! We asked if she needed help and she murmured ‘i’m fine.’ She’s definitely not fine. The girl then began to froth at the mouth before vomiting down herself. We ran and grabbed the police where she refused help, but eventually led her to the emergency tent. Apart from being worried for the girls safety, I was saddened that she got to this state and couldn’t enjoy the rest of the festival.

On a side note of why you won’t see me smuggling pills any time soon, I’ll spare the details but why would you smuggle drugs into a festival in your… ummm… cavities? Ew

IMG_2274

And what about me? I just had a few vodka redbulls and let the awesome dance music carry me away. The best part… I could remember every awesome thing that happened, I wasn’t completely wrecked the next day, I don’t have a massive fine or criminal record and I could stay in control and remain aware and alert in an environment which is rather unpredictable.

So stay safe and get high on life and music!

Stuck on Repeat: Top Artists from 2014

Music is my life! I think if my family had to pick a phrase that I’m always saying it would be either ‘awesome’ or ‘ah, this is the best song.’ I listen to music all day everyday, in the shower, before I go to sleep, pre-drinks, cleaning my room, eating dinner, and there’s always a song to get me pumped, relaxed or motivated. This year I’ve been dipping into a few different genres and discovering some awesome artists worth the click over to youtube!

Vital to the soul
Vital to the soul

1- Bastille – One of my all time favourite bands! I’ve been loving them for about two years and have seen them twice in concert (in Munich and Sydney and I cried both times). This year I’ve been loving their mixes and covers of songs, especially No Angels below.

2 – Asgeir – He’s Icelandic! And thus began my love for his smooth smooth voice. His album In the Silence is excellent! Perfect for when you need a good chill sesh! It’s my go to album when I need to relax to go to sleep, taking me to the sweetest dreams. I unfortunately missed out on seeing him due to date clashes, but he’s on my radar to see live! Below is his cover of Milky Chance’s Stolen Dance (which personally I think it on parr if not better than the original).

3- Violent Soho – Rad Aussie rock band who I was lucky enough to see in concert. Their whole album is filled with solid tunes and I love listening to it when cruising around in my car or when I feel like a grungy chill (i.e ‘cleaning’ my room).

4 – Banks – Very cool, fragile and unique voice, combined with a dirty rhythm… LOVE IT! Loving this London lady. I first discovered her EP and can genuinely say, this was the first album I was extremely excited to see be released!

5- George Ezra – Also great to listen to whilst cruising around, belting out tunes and experimenting with how low your voice goes. At first listen, I wasn’t sold, but it definitely grew on me. And hard! Now I absolutely crave hearing his smooth, sexy, deep and husky voice! Not to mention, he’s very cute! His entire album puts me in a great, positive and motivated mood!

6- Miguel – So sometimes, I love to get down and dirty and feel sexy dancing to some smooth rnb. And I was very excited when I learned he released some new music this year!

7- Taylor Swift – I’m admitting this with mixed feelings. I really do not like her song Shake it off, at all. But the rest of her album, pretty damn catchy! This is the one guilty pleasure I’ll allow myself! Her quirkiness is definitely growing on me and it leaves me thinking I too can look kinda cute whilst stumbling around trying to dance!

8- Sticky Fingers – Aussie reggae, rock, chilled band that leaves you wanting to be on a beach with a few beers and your mates! Fun, happy and chilled!

What are some of your picks from 2014? Let me know in the comments below because I’m always ready to discover new music!
