These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: AUGUST 2018

See ya later August! Winter is over and Spring has Sprung (if you could say that we even had a winter!) I have to admit, I was terrified going into August. Every weekend was booked up with an event of some sort and I had no idea how I was going to get through it. I guess this is a reminder that no matter what lies ahead, you’ll always get through it. You may be tired but at least you bloody did it! So let’s have a look at the craziest month EVER!

👠 Melbourne

Did you even have a girls trip if you didn’t go to Melbourne?! This was such a random and fun weekend! A few friends of mine from high school decided to rendez-vous in Melbourne for a getaway! I honestly had SO MUCH FUN! We stayed in a gorgeous apartment in the CBD. We ate, drank and danced all over Melbourne! I drank waaaay too many espresso martinis, bought funky pants, went to Brunswick for feminst-vegan food, trammed out to Fitzroy for coffee and vintage stores, and managed not to loose anything (sorry Mollie!). I also got to catch up with some friends that I haven’t seen in forever. There’s nothing quite like connecting with old friends and having a beautiful, genuine catch up on one another’s lives. I felt truly lucky to call these people my friends.

🏄‍♀️ City2Surf

It’s that time of year again! The painful 14km from Sydney’s CBD to the beautiful Bondi Beach. This is my 3rd year doing it and was easily one of the best ones! I surprisingly ran (without stopping) for the first half! This is unheard of to anyone who doesn’t know me! A mix between a run and a jog later I was at the finish line! Honestly – it is such a great day! I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! You feel so energised and excited, the adrenaline is real and the beers waiting for you at the end have never tasted so good I assure you of that!

💄Shenanigans

There’s nothing quite like some shenanigans with friends. Here’s just a few snaps. What’s not pictured are is my sore tummy from laughing so much!

👰 Lauren’s wedding

*Hold back tears* This was easily the most beautiful day of my whole month, if not year! I was lucky enough to go to my friend, Lauren’s wedding. I was pretty nervous about going because I only knew a few other people there, and this was only going to be the second wedding I’ve been to. Well I tell you – IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! I felt like I was in a movie! Honestly it was gorgeous and flipped so much of what I thought I knew on my head. I always thought I would elope and have a small, quiet wedding. But what’s the point?! You can have all of your friends, family and loved ones with you to celebrate your special day and eat amazing food! Ah it was honestly gorgeous and it made such an impact on my life. And to Lauren and Adam, thank you for including me on your special day! Your love for each other is evident as it filled the entire room! I wish you all the happiness in your new life together. *cries*

✍🏽 Publishing an article in the Tertangala

Ever since I started uni, I’ve wanted to write an article for the Tertangala (the student magazine). Actually, even before I started uni! I thought that writing for the student magazine was the coolest thing you could do! And this month I finally did it! My lovely friend Laura approached me and asked me to write an article about immigration (basically my honours thesis) and the article basically wrote itself! I feel like this is such a cool addition to my student experience here at UOW and I’m so glad I could share my voice and somewhat, expertise on an issue I’m passionate about!

🎶Tunes

Nicki Minaj-  Queen.
My girl is baaaaccckkk! (rolls tongue like Nicki). This album is INSANE! Starting off with some sweet honey tunes, she takes you through a smooth journey of rnb and rap. Her hard hitting stuff is rough, her sexy stuff hits the spot and her ballads are contagious. All I’m thinking is… when is she touring Australia?!

Running Touch – My Hands.
This song is epic! I’ve had it on repeat this month. Everytime I hear it, it digs its way into my earholes and stays there. It’s very unique and excellently produced. I just love it and am definitely all about it.

The Preatures.
I was lucky enough to score tickets to the Preatures at the beginning of the month. I have to admit, I didn’t really know a whole lot of their music. Nonetheless, I went along. Holy shit, seeing them live changed my whole perspective towards them! The singer is an INCREDIBLE performer and I was purely captivated the whole way through. I’ve been listening to them non-stop since and think I can officially call myself a fan!

🎥 Flicks

Orange is the new black – Season 6. It’s back! Finally! I really should cancel my Netflix subscription while I’m trying to finish my thesis (I may or may not have finished this season in a week) but it’s totally worth it to feast my senses on this masterpiece! There are some truly magical moments in this series. Moments that catch your breath, coax tears from your eyes and inspire laughter.

Elizabeth-Rodriguez-Selenis-Leyva-Diane-Guerrero-Jackie-Cruz.jpg

Book Club.
So Chloe and I went to the movies to watch Crazy Rich Asians. And I read the movie timetable wrong and we were a day early (classic!). So instead we went to watch Book Club. OMG it was hilarious! It was so cute to see these little cute ‘old’ ladies galavanting around LA! Would recommend if you’re after a feel-good flick and want an insight into your future as a ‘mature aged’ kick ass woman!

So I’m not usually a fan of Sam Kold but this video is RAD that he deserves a mention! Holy shit the YouTube game is changing because of creators like him. Storytelling is evolving, vlogging is growing and travel is becoming more daring. This video is pure awesome. If you didn’t want to go to Brazil before this, you will now!

📗 Book

Illicit FlirtationsL Labor, migration, and sex trafficking in Tokyo by Rhacel Salazar Parreñas
*nerdy talk* This book is awesome! Written in an engaging, human-centred way that looks into the everyday lives of Filipino migrant workers working as hostesses in Japan. When most people hear the word sex-trafficking, they think victims coerced into a transnational network of crime, gangs and slavery. This book completely turns that on its head. At least in my research, I think it’s really important to research migrants as individuals with agency. They are not useless, mindless people that make stupid decisions. The world of hostessing is complex and there are a range of different environmental, social, political, health and economic reasons why someone may end up as a hostess in Tokyo. A lot of the time, it’s actually their choice. We cannot ever make these choices for these people and I think this book does a great job of delving into the difficult decisions faced by thousands in Japan and across the world.

📝 Quote

I think that deep down, to my very core, I am a happy person. I think my default setting is ‘optimist,’ and while I receive a lot of jokes about it, I think I’m coming to realise just how much I value my optimistic attitude towards things. I know that sometimes I can be unreasonably optimistic, but in my eyes, it’s better than being unreasonably pessimistic. It just comes second nature to me because I really believe in people, in life and in the universe. I feel that everything will work out the way it’s meant to, and with a little hard work, good luck and you can live a pretty damn awesome life. It’s radical because I think a lot of people find comfort in pessimism or pain. I think that a lot of people are scared to be optimistic because it means being open, hopeful and vulnerable and many people just can’t deal with the fear of being disappointed. So yea – I freakin love this quote! (Plus there’s a little combi van and a rainbow hehe)

*breathe in, breathe out* what a hectic month. To all of you out there who are feeling like life is travelling that little bit fast… it’s OK. I promise you. Overwhelming feelings of stress, anxiety and worry are just temporary. They will come and go and with each new day, you are one step closer to your goal, and one step ahead of where you were the day before. September will be wild so watch out. Remember to look after yourself, listen to your mind, your body, and know that there’s always someone there for you. It’s going to be awesome! So let’s do this!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JULY 2018

July is by far the best month of the year. Not only is it Winter which means jeans, jumpers, beanies and trackies, but it’s also my birthday month. And for those of you who partied with me at some point this month, you would know that those beers indeed hit a little harder now. But seriously, this month has been amazing! I love when it comes to writing these posts because it reminds me to reflect on all of the things I have done and all of the people I have shared special memories with. Chuck a birthday in there and I am gratitude overload! Honestly, life is good!

🎉 My birthday

24! Holy moly look out world! I recently reflected on all the things I had learnt across my time on earth, and I’m feeling so excited, happy and beyond stoked for everything coming my way! My birthday was well and truly magical and I’m so grateful for my friends and family who made it extra special! From a glorious cheese and wine spread, to espresso martinis, drunk kebabs, coffees galore, a road trip down south, an epic BBQ, a few too many beers and beautiful people to share it with, it was the best way to celebrate one more year of wisdom and silliness! Check out the photos here.

🍺Gigs

This month I went to some pretty epic gigs (let’s be honest – is there a month where I don’t?!). I went to Big Top feat. The Wombats & Skegss (there were more artists but we missed them). It was 16-year-old Adelaide’s dream come true! Dancing the night away to the Wombats with your best friends in the world! I also went to Alex the Astronaut and I was super impressed with her ability to captivate a room. Plus I was ticket bitch for my mates band Creatures at Leisure. I’ve known these guys since day one of uni and it’s pretty awesome to watch their journey as musicians. If you haven’t checked them out already… what are you doing? Treat your earbuds!

🍷Work shenanigans

I am so lucky to work with such a great team! Every day I am inspired and challenged more than I would have ever thought. I feel that I’m really learning the importance of working in a positive workplace with people who help build you up and I’m super grateful to be apart of a team that does just that!

🎶Tunes

Hatchie. I have been listening to Hatchie ON REPEAT! Her music is retro-inspired and it makes me feel like I’m walking through an 80’s rom-com starring Drew Barrymore! I seriously love the vibes of her voice and would totally recommend listening to with flared pants and a denim jacket.

Mallrat. Woo some more awesome tunes coming your way. This music is super chill with some good ol road trip with your bestie vibes!

🎥 Flicks

Nanette. Wow. I really am quite speechless and am still processing the power behind Hannah Gadsby’s ‘comedy’ performance available for all to watch on Netflix (get onto it ASAP). I started off laughing which turned into crying which turned into a genuine human connection. There’s some lesbian content sprinkled in there which is pretty enlightening, but all women should watch this. And better yet, all men should watch and learn from this. It’s uncomfortable, it’s confronting and a bit uneasy. But you know what else can be all of these things at once? Being a woman! Thanks Dylan for recommending this to me because it’s not my usual type of show (comedy) but damn it’s a must watch for all of us living in this crazy confusing world.

The DREAMers: How the Undocumented Youth Movement Transformed the Immigrant Rights Debate by Walter J. Nicholls

I read this book for my thesis but I would recommend it to anyone remotely interested in immigration, human rights and activism. It’s well researched and well written making it easy to understand for those of you unfamiliar with the DREAMers. This book is incredibly timely and I’m glad to have got my hands on it! If you’d like to borrow it, let me know!

Rose & Rosie. I AM IN LOVE!!! These gals are amazingly entertaining, funny and just on point! I got completely sucked down a YouTube wormhole watching their videos. They’re hilarious and I love watching their chemistry on camera! #Obsessed!

Bryce + Hailey.  Aw these two are so so cuteeeee! They give me complete fashion envy and make me want to buy a van, raid a thrift store and galavant through fields of tulips with a Polaroid camera! They’re adorable and I’d totally recommend following them on Instagram too! They’re very talented so check em out!

📝 Quote

I’ve been ridiculously happy lately (if you couldn’t tell). I’ve never felt so sure of myself and the people I love (which is crazy because I usually doubt myself and second guess relationships). Maybe it’s because I’m 24 now and have reached a new level of maturity, but I don’t have time for anyone or anything that doesn’t help me shine and be the best I can be. Life is too damn short. Sure – life isn’t always smooth sailing, but it’s nothing you can’t simply talk about, take a deep breath, let it go and move on from. You’ve got this, you’re freakin irresistible, don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re not.

Well damn, what a month. Complete with a beautiful full moon/lunar eclipse, I feel sensually connected to the earth and the people around me. I’m excited to move into August with the same attitude, fire and love.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JUNE 2018

What the heck? I swear I just hit publish on my May Favourite things right?! June has absolutely FLOWN! Winter is well and truly upon us, I finally have an excuse to wear my trackies for days on end and it’s perfect snuggle weather. It’s been emotional, stressful, joyous, exciting and hectic… so let’s take a moment to pause, breathe, and look back on the month that was.

🏠Home Visits

This month I was a tour guide for Soph around Port Stephens, and Soph showed me around her country home town of Leeton. Despite the torrential rain that hailed down from Port Stephens, it was awesome to be home (as always). Heading out to Leeton was pretty damn awesome. For those of you who don’t know (which I had zero idea before going there), it’s about 6-7 hours west of Sydney. It’s a stunning town with lots of charm and the best furniture store for miles! Sometimes it’s just so nice to get away for a little adventure and these few weekends away was exactly what I needed!

💃 Shenanigans

What’s a month without a couple of shenanigans here and there. Another month and some more blurry photos to remind me just how lucky I am to call these beautiful people my friends.

🌲 Sublime

OK so I may have gone a bit overboard this month on the sublime hikes. I just can’t help it! It’s so addictive and you get so competitive with yourself. It hurts, it’s painful, it’s a struggle but damn does it feel good when you reach the top! That’s why I keep on going back and snapping those pictures! Plus it’s a good way to practice your self timer skills!

✨ VIVID

I don’t care how overrated anyone says Vivid is… I FREAKIN LOVE IT! I’ve been every year for 4 years now and it honestly makes me fall in love with Sydney all over again. It’s a great excuse to head out into the big ol city, catch up with beautiful friends, have a drink or two and take some gorgeous photos. It’s always amazing walking among the bright lights and soaking up the creativity and innovation that Sydney has to offer.

Courtney Barnett. So it only took me a few years but I’m finally on the Courtney Barnett train. Her new album is incredible and I’ve gone back to revisit her older stuff and wow I have been missing out! The song below makes me want to join a rock band, learn the guitar and belt out those lyrics to a drunk bar. She’s talented, edgy and all round kick ass. It you’re a bit on the edge just give it a go… I promise you’ll thank yourself for it.

George Ezra. Yay! Finally some new music from this deep, mellow voiced guru! I am thoroughly in love with his new album and his voice is smoother than ever! It’s so unique and happy. His music just makes you feel good and sometimes that’s all you need from an album.

5 Seconds of Summer. Guilty confession…. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I love this album! Who would’ve thought? 5 Seconds of Summer. I am not usually one for boy bands but damn their music is so damn catchy! The song below in particular! Oh yea, and I guess they’re maybe a bit cute too….

Florence + The Machine. This red headed goddess can do no wrong! Even though this album was only released a few hours ago, I have had it on repeat and cannot get enough! Funnily enough, I never really got into Florence + The Machine and when I heard she was releasing new music I was pretty impartial. But hearing this song changed everything. She is so powerful yet delicate, fragile yet strong, confident yet vulnerable. I am in AWE! Plus she’s a fair skinned red hear and us women have to stick together! Hello new girl crush!

🎥 Flicks

The Incredibles 2. I’ve waited 14 years for this… need I say more? In all seriousness, this movie was pretty damn awesome. There’s always something special about going to the movies, sneaking in drinks and munching down on some popcorn!

Gaycation. There’s nothing I love more than an entertaining and engaging documentary series. Gaycation is fucking fabulous and imperative that everyone watch it! It’s free to watch on SBS On Demand, and I promise you’ll be binge watching it. If you love travel and culture and are curious about the everyday reality of the LGBTQI community across the world then this is for you. As someone in a same sex relationship, it’s confronting and has challenged me to grapple with my privilege, identity and where I fit in (if I fit in at all). There’s a blog post coming soon so watch this space for more about all things gay. Oh – did I mention Ellen Page hosts the series?! Enough said.

📗Books

I’ve been a little naughty this month and haven’t read any books! #fail
In my defence, I was finishing off my honours coursework and have been galavanting across NSW while working 30 hours a week. That said, I did just order several new books for my research so stay tuned and I promise I’ll be a good little book worm!

This month (as amazing as it was), I found myself upset and struggling to deal with my emotions. (nothing to worry about – in a normal ‘I’m tired and have so much to do but so little time with a pinch of hormonal fury’ way). Nonetheless,  I found myself needing to really stop and take a moment for myself. I guess it’s a reminder for myself, and any of you out there that sometimes feel a little down, that it’s OK to feel this way. It’s not the end, it’s not over, god we’ve only just begun this wondrous journey! Sometimes it’s jut nice to know that you’re not alone and that sometimes you need to be alone in order to reconnect with yourself.

It’s ok.. take care of yourself. No explanations needed. Feed your soul. ♡࿊

Hey June (hehe what a tune!), but seriously, you were pretty awesome but I have a feeling that July will be even more awesome! It’s my birthday month and the month of all things good and fun and amazing! There’ll be a lot of hard work coming my way but it’ll be worth it to reap in the rewards! July – let’s do this!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MAY 2018

Um excuse me, where did May go? I think I blinked a few times and suddenly we’re smacked with Winter and it’s end of semester! How flippin crazy?! This month I’ve been consumed with work and study, and as always had a little boogie here and there. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved this month. I’ve learnt that playing hard, means you gotta work hard, and working hard means you gotta throw yourself into your work. I feel that I’ve really reignited a love of research, learning and inquisitiveness, that is inspiring me to keep it up. With that said, I’m really looking forward to June where I can have a little bit of a break, and come back refreshed and ready for that grind!

👣Sublime

For those of you local to the Gong, you know about the painful hike that is sublime point. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s not just your casual stroll! With approximately 1000 steps at the VERY steep 1km incline, this one’s sure to get your blood pumping. It’s hard, you will get sweaty, but the view is absolutely worth it!

IMG_4364.JPG

☀️ Those nature vibes

Carrying on from Sublime, there’s nothing quite like getting in touch with a little bit of nature to reset the stress of life. Luckily there’s been some stunning sunrises that have made me feel incredibly connected with the earth, sun, moon and ocean, and honestly, there’s no better feeling.

💋 Friend love

I know I keep coming back to this but maybe it’s because I have the best freakin friends on earth! I’m sooooo grateful for all of the lovely humans that surround me. Whether it’s to study, party, coffee, adventure, sweat, cry or watch Masterchef with, your love means the absolute world to me!

🎶Tunes

This Is America – Childish Gambino. Yep he’s a genius. It’s not just the incredibly intelligent video clip, but the song itself is incredibly impassioning. People in colour have long suffered in America’s ‘land of the free.’ Artists like Donald Glover have been using music and art to stand up and fight against oppression. Sadly, police brutality and violence against people of colour continue to die at the hands of hatred and guns. This is song is an incredible piece of social commentary. The question remains, how many more hits must come before change is implemented.

I Want A Girl (Carrie) – Moaning Lisa. Woo heeeeelllloooooooo there! After seeing these guys at Groovin the Moo I fell in LOVE! They’re absolutely rad and I can’t get enough! There’s nothing I love more than a kick ass girl band who is all about promoting love and support between and for women.

DMA’s. Do I really have to say more? I’ve been listening to their new album on REPEAT and I’m in love!

🎥 Flicks

Red Sparrow. This isn’t for the faint hearted. It’s a Russian spy thriller that’s pretty graphic, pretty hectic and pretty full on! Not exactly the ‘girls night in’ kinda movie Chloe and I had in mind, but nonetheless, DAMN it’s good! Plus I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence and she’s a total bad ass in this flick!

Angela Davis: An Autobiography

If you’ve seen me at all this month, then I’ve most likely told you all about Angela Davis. GIRL CRUSH ALERT! I came across Davis during an assignment I had to do on critical theory. Not wanting to write about old white men again, stumbling across Davis, lesbian, ex-Black Panther, communist, did not disappoint. In fact, I was so inspired by her ideas and contribution to academic research and activism, I went to the library and borrowed her autobiography. Yep, I absolutely love and admire her, and I would absolutely recommend this book and familiarising yourself with her work. She wrote it when she was 28 years old and had been imprisoned on false allegations. Her story is one that deserves to be heard by all people, especially students, wanting to make a change in the world.

Well May you have been delightful! As we brace ourselves for a chilly winter, work and uni commitments are becoming more demanding and intense. So if I seem a bit stressed or distant, I’m sorry. I know that this is my time to grind, work hard and really throw myself into everything. I’ll be FREE in October and damn will the satisfaction taste sweet!

These Are A Few of My Favourite Things: APRIL 2018

Well hello 2018! You have done a full 180 and have been delivering nothing but good times! (thank you). This month has been a freakin roller coaster and I can’t believe it’s over already! I can honestly say that this month was filled with joy, celebration and laughter (and I’ve never been happier). I’ve been partying hard and working harder (working hard doesn’t look good on Instagram so that’s why you may not believe it). But seriously, to everyone who featured in my life this month… THANKYOU! What a ride!

🎓 Graduation

Pictures are worth a thousand words. But what if you took one thousand pictures?? So I finally got to suit up in the incredible blue cap and gown. I’m so grateful for my incredible friends and family that came to celebrate with me. Yes I’m still studying (my Honours degree is a separate degree) but it was pretty great to take some time out of my hectic life and celebrate the achievement of finishing my double degree.

🏠Home

There’s no place like home. Lucky for me, home is absolutely paradise! This was one of the first weekends I’d been home when all us of kids were together. I absolutely love my fam and sadly don’t get to see them as much as I would like. Working part time, studying full time and living 4 hours away will do that to a person. But it’s so great to know that when I do go home, I have lovely humans to eat, drink, swim and laugh with. My favourite bunch of goofballs.

🎬 Being assistant director for the  day (enjoying the heck out of my new job)

I’ve recently started a new job at uni doing digital marketing and damn am I LOVING IT! A project I was working on involved 3 days of filming on campus with an awesome film company, CRATER. I got to interview staff and students and prompt them to provide the kind of answers we were looking for. It was incredibly high energy work, but hearing all of the wonderful feedback from my colleagues and CRATER was so encouraging. Film and photography is something I’m deeply passionate about and I am so grateful for this hands on experience being an assistant director for the day!

🎶 Didirri & Crooked Colours

This month I reigned it in a little and only went to two gigs, Didirri and Crooked Colours. They were both incredible! I went to RAD to see Didirri and it was so gorgeously intimate and special. I rendez-vous’d with a girl I met in Montreal and had a great night being lovingly serenaded. Crooked Colours was a great little party indeed! Especially when you go on a double date!

🐄 Groovin the Moo

OK so gigs are AMAZING but there’s nothing quite like a good ol music festival to fulfil your gig desires. This year I went to the Canberra festival (I usually go to Maitland) and it was RAD! I went with an awesome bunch of people and boogied all day! Towards the end of the night it dropped to extremely cold temperatures (around 3 degrees) and I’ve never been more grateful for dressing appropriately and my Docs!

💖 The start of something new

Whether I know you in person or through the blogosphere, it’s pretty awesome to tell you that I am dating an incredibly amazing woman named Sophie. For some of you who are extra attentive on Instagram, you may have already connected the dots. For others, it may come as a complete surprise. And I totally get it. Life’s full of wonderful little surprises. I am incredibly excited to share this new chapter of my life with Soph and see what this surprise has in store for us.

Damn I have had these guys on repeat for the past few weeks! Such a great band to sing along with and rock out to!

Press Club – Headwreck.

You know me, I love my rock music. And I especially love some kick ass female rock bands! These guys are extremely talented and their entire album is addictive!

The Office. OK so I’m a little late to the bandwagon on this but holy shit this show is HILARIOUS! I seriously cannot get enough and find myself laughing endlessly! Anyone who’s seen it knows that there’s really not much else to be said because it’s genius. And anyone who hasn’t seen it, well what the hell are you doing with your life?

giphy.gif

The Handmaid’s Tale. YES YES YES! I read the book a few months ago and honestly can’t stop raving about it. The book is incredibly well written and definitely a book of our generation. And the TV series is equally amazing! It has incredible cinematography and carries a very strong message that I believe will be a test of our time.

📗Books

Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. WOW. A crucial read for anyone wanting to further understand our fucked up world. Particularly for a white person, this book is essential in the process of coming to terms with our white privilege. The books is centered on racial tension in the UK which is extremely insightful. When you hear the term ‘race wars’ you usually think of gun violence against black men in America. Britain has a troubled history of race relations (um hello colonialism) and is currently struggling with an identity crisis. I especially loved the chapter dedicated to Feminism and race. As a feminist, I’m extremely aware that feminism can be exclude women of colour. Reni’s insight is truly essential if we are to ever create a world without racial prejudice and discrimination.

Every Lie I’ve Ever Told by Rosie Waterland. If you read her breakthrough novel ‘The Anti-Cool Girl’, then you’ve absolutely got to read this book! Witty, smart, sad, raw, Rosie takes her through her struggles with mental health and dealing with the troubles life throws at us. I smashed this book out in a day and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Hey Nadine. This girl has been absolutely killing it lately! Her India vlogs are incredible! She’s been pumping out content which is a real testament to her hard work and dedication. It’s great to get an insight into travelling somewhere like India and is incredibly inspiring for my travel bucket list!

📝 Quote

This quote has been extremely motivating this month. It makes me believe that I am here on this earth for a reason and that our life is such a precious gift. A gift that shouldn’t be wasted on worrying about things beyond our control, or things that do not bring complete joy to our lives. It centers me and leaves me thinking that this big bad world maybe ain’t so bad after all.

Wow April! Thank you for turning 2018 around and delivering a great hand! It’s pretty amazing to think about all of the wonderful things happening and the wonderful people in my life right now. Moving in to ‘mental May’ I just need to remember what keeps me grounded, to work hard, not slack off and maybe not drink so much.

Life is freakin amazing!

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: MARCH 2018

I guess time really is the heart’s biggest healer. March absolutely flew by, and despite some of the negative things I encountered this month, I can honestly say I’ve never felt happier. That’s why I really believe everything happens for a reason. You go through these rough times and come out the other end a stronger, more resilient and a more confident person (thanks universe!). But damn March you were awesome, hectic and wild, so let’s have a little look back on the month that was.

Screen Shot 2018-04-01 at 12.19.19 PM

🎵 Gigs

March was the month of music! I went to several incredible gigs including; Tired Lion, Tiny Little Houses, Camp Cope & Smith Street Band. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love going to concerts, having a few beers and dancing along to some music. I was lucky enough to go with some pretty rad people and have a blast! I have to say that Tiny Little Houses totally blew my mind and I’m now even more obsessed with them (sorry Chloe and Dylan for having to put up with me playing their music on repeat!).

🌈 Mardi Gras

If you were following me on Instagram, then you would have known that I went to Mardi Gras. And if you’re not following me on Instagram, what the hell are you doing?! (@missadelaide_) Mardi Gras is my FAVOURITE day of the year! It’s a time to dress up, glitterfy yourself and anyone within proximity, to be yourself, feel confident and express your love in whatever form it takes. I think the photos speak for themselves; I had a flipping amazing time with some flipping amazing people!

💻 Starting a new job

This month I started an exciting new job as a Digital Marketing Officer at the University of Wollongong for the Faculty of Law, Humanities and Arts. It’s so exciting and daunting starting a new job, in a new team with lots of new responsibilities. But the first few weeks have been amazing, I work with an incredible team and I feel like I have a lot of valuable ideas to contribute. It’s also the first time I’ve felt I actually have a degree (which is super exciting). Feel free to check out the UOWCreative Instagram page that I’m in charge of!

😎Shenanigans

Whether it’s for a beer, coffee, tea, boogie, karaoke sesh, swim, hug, these beautiful people have helped make March purely magical. Sure there were probably one (or five) too many hangovers, but it was totally worth it to share all of the moments with you.

🎶Tunes

Crooked Colours. Ummmm so where have these guys been hiding my whole life? I get strong Alt-J vibes and their music is super chill yet funky (my fave). I’m going to see them next month which makes me all the more keen to keep their album on repeat!

Tiny Little Houses. OK so they also appeared in my November faves, but after seeing them at UniBar, they make it back to the top again! They were soooo incredible live! Their music just gets in my brain and heart and I can’t stop listening to it. PLUS – they responded to my Insta story, which in my eyes is the coolest thing ever and I love them looooong time!

Ali Barter. The perfect amount of badassery right here. Dealing with the remnants of a breakup is not easy. But when you’ve got some kick ass tunes like this one, it makes it a little easier.

🎥 Flicks

Sin Frontera. This is a compelling short film about migrants with undocumented status living in the United States. I would 100% recommend this to everyone and it was particularly captivating for me and my thesis I’m working on.

📗Books

If you’re looking for a little girl power inspiration, then this book has got you covered. It’s not the kind of book you sit down and read cover to cover. But flicking through the pages and reading about these incredible women of history truly is amazing! It also really resonated to me how deeply embedded sexism and gender inequality is in our society. One of my favourite sections was about badass women wearing trousers. Yes trousers. Because back in the day it was illegal! The Times wrote about this only 2 years ago in reference to Hillary Clinton and thus my friends, this book is necessary to realise how far we’ve come, but how far we need to go.

@travel_inhershoes

So I’ve fan girled over Aggie for some time now, but this month particularly she is deserving of a mention. HER PHOTOS ARE INSANE! Not only is she insanely beautiful (that’s kind of a given these days to be an Instagrammer) but her photos are unique, captivating and fun. A very worthy reason to give her a follow is her Instagram Stories. She’s always posting content whether it’s of her travels, behind the scenes of her photos or of her dog (LOVE!). This girl is certainly talented and certainly works hard. She is an absolute must for all of you obsessed with travel.

WARNING: she will leave you with a major case of travel jealousy.

This month I made peace with myself and loved myself for that. The past month hasn’t been the easiest, but it’s been the happiest I’ve been in a looooooong time. Being strong enough to stand up for yourself, can sometimes be quite difficult. But at the end of it all, you’re going to walk away knowing that you’ve got your back, you will not tolerate being treated like shit, and that you know your self worth and should only invest time and love into people who make you feel your absolute BEST! Self love is the only kinda love I need right now and it feels amazing.

These Are A Few of My Favourite Things: FEBRUARY 2018

For the shortest month of the year, February sure did deliver a lot. I think I can positively say that this month has been the most tumultuous and testing month of my life. And it seems like it wasn’t just for me but a lot of people in my life. In the 4 weeks that were February I found myself single again, moved houses, have experienced incredible stress around our previous tenancy and landlord, found out more about myself than I ever thought and been offered a new job. Maybe chaos attracts chaos. But one thing I do know is that strength attracts strength and I sure have been inspired and motivated by all of the wonderful people around me. The people who have helped lift me up, push me out of my comfort zone and help me find strength in some pretty challenging times, and it is these people I am eternally grateful for. Alas, February is over and finally a much awaited March arrives.

💃🏿 Bangarra Dance Company

I guess you could call it Christmas in February, because for Christmas I bought Mum tickets to see Bangarra Dance Company’s show at the Newcastle Civic Theatre. It was such a gorgeous performance and I was absolutely in awe. Wow! I cannot recommend seeing them enough! Thanks Mum for being the ultimate date to the theatre!

IMG_1997

🎨Museum of Contemporary Art

So I finally made it to the MCA’s incredible exhibition by Pipilotti Rist’s ‘Sip my Ocean.’ I had seen several Instagrammers check out this exhibition and damn their photos were incredible…. so I wanted to check it out for myself! Chloe and I headed to Sydney dressed to the 9’s and damn it did not disappoint! It was an incredible experience of light and sound! Plus we got several pretty awesome Instagrams so I’m pretty content.

🎹 RAD Bar

For those of you who don’t know… RAD is (as the name implies) a super rad bar in Wollongong that is home to some incredibly live music. Showcasing local and incredible acts, I constantly forget how awesome RAD is!

💕 Date Night

No matter how rough and tough, or exciting and wild life gets, it’s so important to take a breather and catch up with the people around you that you love. I had a little date night with Chantelle, and it felt so great to go out and just spend some quality time together. I also spent Valentines day with the one and only Miss Tishia! We ate way too much food together and hatched our plan to take over the world. Watch out friends, date night is coming to a night near you.

📷 Polaroid Camera

For Christmas I was spoilt and my sister bought me a polaroid camera. And I wasn’t sure how much I would use it, but surprise surprise, I love taking photos and this is no exception. These are just some of the pics that I’ve snapped and I absolutely love it! I think my favourite thing is my reaction when I photo turns out well!

Steele Syndicate. I was lucky enough to randomly catch these guys at RAD bar this month and DAMN I have not danced so much! Their vibe is so funky and uplifting! Add a few beers and you my friend, have a good night filled with dancing and good times ahead of you.

Odette. OMG this song! I’ve heard it so many times on Triple J but I never picked up on who the angel behind it was! Finally I’ve tracked her down and wow she’s amazing! Her other work is amazing and she is definitely one to keep on your radar!

Vallis Alps

These guys!!! Her vocals are so astounding and the beat has wicked good vibes! I’ve been listening to this EP on my way to work and I assure you I’ve been arriving in a great mood! Get around it!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Audrey Hepburn you mega babe! There’s nothing quite like re-watching an old classic with some amazing company. Whilst I must admit I get quite lost and caught up in the plot, it’s so joyful to be whisked away back in time to the golden ages. This movie is a constant reminder to keep it classy but just a little nasty.

📚 Books

Chapter One by Daniel Flynn. So there’s this company called Thankyou. I’m sure you may be familiar with it. They’re basically a social enterprise where money goes directly towards a project in another country. You may know Thankyou water. When you buy a bottle of water, proceeds go towards providing clean water to a community in Vientam for example. This book is the business behind it and I must admit is it very captivating, interesting and inspiring. Whilst I have some pretty big critiques of the company and the execution of their mission, the one thing that cannot be faulted is their determination to get in there, be taken seriously and make a difference. It’s an easy read and for anyone interested in start ups, business and development, then this one is for you!

The world doesn’t need another book, it needs an idea.

You can find out more information here.

Bryce + Hailey

Uh what is it with cute couples and YouTube?! There’s something about these two that are so adorable that I can’t help but fall in love with their videos! Their style is funky as and they seem like the sweetest most genuine humans. I particularly loved their video from around Europe so make sure to give these guys some love.

📝 Quote

So as you can imagine, this month was a little rough. It’s OK, I’m OK and I know that everything is going to be OK. But it takes time to come to that realisation. Not even the realisation, but to truly feel and believe it. It’s too easy to convince yourself that you’re alright when you’re not, and (sadly) too easy to fake a smile. What is difficult is acknowledging you’re lost, confused, sad, lonely, optimistic, excited, relieved…. confronting those feelings is difficult. But once you do, and choose to surround yourself with people who are ‘loving, nourishing, kind and authentic,’ you’ll realise how amazing you are and how much you deserve!

I can honestly say that I feel like a stronger person now that the month from hell is over! With each ending comes new beginnings, some in the most unlikely of places. March, I am excited for everything to come, I’m committing to working hard and playing even harder… just please be kind. I’d really appreciate it.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: JANUARY 2018

There’s nothing like a new year (new me) and a fresh start. I wrote some goals for the year and published them online for the world to see (you can read them here).  This month has been hectic with moving, work and getting my shit together to smash out another year, I’m convinced I’ve blinked and January has disappeared. So let’s look back at the hectic month that was.

👪 Family Visits

I love when my family comes to visit me in the Gong. I love taking them out and about to my latest and greatest cafes, restaurants and discoveries. This was no exception. I took them rock climbing and tortured them with a climb of sublime point. We went to some lovely cafes and all round had a great time! Thanks fam.

🏠 Moving House!

It’s that time of year again! The time where I pack up my life, sign a new lease and get some brand spanking new keys and house mates. I’ve just moved into a beautiful apartment with two beautiful people and I am so so so excited to be living where I am! Close to the beach, town and the station… I feel like the world is at my fingertips! Unfortunately I haven’t taken a visually aesthetically pleasing photo of my room yet but I sure will soon and I sure will let you guys know!

☀️ Port Stephens Tour

I’m pretty lucky to have grown up in Port Stephens. And there’s nothing quite like taking someone I love there to show them around. So I took Mitch to see the sights. Of course including Tomaree mountain, Murray’s Brewery, a romantic dinner at The Deck, and a cheeky dip at the nudist beach.

Cloud Control – Rainbow City.  Wow have I had this on repeat! It’s grungy, funky and I’m in love! They’ve had a few really great singles out lately that I’ve been loving, so make sure to add this to your Summer hit list asap.

Winston Surfshirt – Be About You. It’s sexy, smooth and funky… what more could you ask for in a song. It’s the ultimate Sunday sesh tune to kick back, bob your head and sip your beer to.

Ocean Alley – Holiday. I don’t know what took me so long but damn am I in love with these guys! Their whole album is on point! They played recently at the uni bar and I’m devo I missed them. I get some serious Sticky Fingers vibes from them which is always fantastic. Their song Comedown is another banger I’ve had on repeat!! 10/10

Damon and Jo

Oh my god I have literally watched them for hours and thought they are the funniest, brightest and more awesome people alive! I’ve only just come across their channel and I am honestly in awe. They speak something crazy like 6 languages and produce videos in French, Portuguese and English (WHAT!!!) It’s so contagious watching their fun friendly chemistry and really puts you in a positive mood! For anyone that loves travel and language… these guys are for you!

Woman of the Hour – Lena Dunham podcast

So I’m a huge fan of Lena Dunham and am slowly getting more and more intrigued into this mysterious world of podcasts. I found Woman of the Hour on the music streaming app ‘Deezer’ that I use (it’s like Spotify but better). I’ve laughed, cried and been incredibly inspired by these podcasts and is an absolute must for all!

📝 Quote

This speaks to me. Happiness is something that I value SO MUCH! It is core to who I am as a person and my values. One of the hardest things is acknowledging and accepting those moments when you’re actually not happy. It’s not a bad thing and it’s nothing to feel guilty about, but instead, should act as a reminder to check in with yourself, look after yourself and ultimately make changes that will lead to your happiness. And there’s only one person in the entire world that can ensure that happens… YOU.

February, please be kind. I’m not sure I can handle another crazy whirlwind month. The grind is real and the work is hard, I just need to remember to love myself along the way.

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: DECEMBER 2017

Surprise surprise… I’m surprised about this month flying by again. Seriously though… where do the days go? December is always a pretty special time of year, Christmas, family, New Years Eve, thinking about next year and trying not to freak out, plus trying not to over indulge in all that Christmas food… it’s eventful and a lot of hard work! So let’s look back on the crazy month that was December!

Screenshot 2018-01-10 17.55.21

🚐 Western Australia Road Trip

There is honestly nothing like exploring your own back yard. And when your back yard is Australia and freakin huge… there’s a lot to explore! We were lucky enough to journey over to Western Australia for a week to visit our friend Josie in her home town of Manjimup and thought we’d turn this incredible invitation into a little road trip! We got a wicked van, and hopped down the coast. It was absolutely incredible and I’m so glad for all of the memories!

🕺🏻Melbourne Escape

As if one interstate escape wasn’t enough, Mitch and I jetted off to Melbourne for a weekend to see PAUL KELLY, GANG OF YOUTHS, MEG MAC & GRETTA RAY! What an epic concert! It was so nice to getaway (again) and discover another city with Mitch!

⛵ Sydney to Hobart Hype!

So my incredibly talented boyfriend is also a sailor. And a pretty good one because he did the Sydney to Hobart! He raced in Black Sheep and I was lucky enough to see him off in Sydney! I got to check out the yacht and get in amongst the hustle and bustle of it all!

IMG_1278IMG_1280

🏠 Home

Christmas means home and home means good food, good people and good times. It was so amazing to catch up with old friends, family and my dogs!

🎶 Tunes

Slow Mover – Angie McMahon. This tune has been on absolute repeat!! Her voice is so different and hypnotising that this is a must for all of those indie Aussie music lovers out there.

Jude – Didirri. Mitch got me onto this song and naturally, every time we get into the car it’s the first song we put on. Another Aussie artist absolutely killing it!

 📗Books

Sad news guys… I didn’t finish any books this month! What have I been doing?! To be fair, I’m half way through The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood (not sure I’ll finish it to be honest). But I’ve also been reading a lot of journal articles for my thesis for next year. No excuse I know but that’s what I’ve been reading. Gotta pick up my game next month!

The Crown – Season 2. Wow this show is actually soooooo good! I binge watched season 2 in about a week and I truly didn’t want it to end. I loved discovering and uncovering more about the royal family (doesn’t everyone) and it was so stunningly put together. Queen Elizabeth was a badass! So maybe that’s why I loved it so much.

I’ve been indulging in my ‘usual’ YouTubers this past month…. Flying the Nest, Logan Paul, Raya Was Here etc. I’m a huge fan of Tim Kellner however he’s one of Youtube’s ‘quality over quantity’ guys. This month he released the video below ‘Paradise Lost’ and it is incredibly mesmerising, captivating and innovative. His video’s always leave me inspired and challenged and this one is no exception.

📝 Quote

“The woman who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual” – Mohadesa Najumi

Ah this quote gets me. So often I seek other people’s approval, agreeability and acceptance. And so often I left confused and worried that I won’t live up to other people’s expectations. It’s so important to listen to yourself, trust your instincts, ask for advice and guidance when necessary but at the end of the day… it’s your life and you gotta own it!
